Job Description

This position will be filled at the Researcher Level IV or V based on the qualifications of the selected candidate:

NREL is looking for an accomplished and dynamic candidate with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our cutting-edge research and development team. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in hydropower and pumped storage systems and have an established track record in areas including hydropower technology, power systems, project development (from concept through to construction and operation), and grid integration. The candidate shall also have the ability to lead innovative research projects, proposals, and technical publications in hydropower and pumped storage.

The successful candidate will join the team and will help lead portions of NREL's hydropower growing portfolio. NREL conducts research on the role of hydropower technologies at all levels of the power system, as well as in integrated multi-energy systems and works actively to support the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The candidate should have the ability to :

  • Work with management and senior staff to help refine and support the strategy and direction of hydropower research at NREL.
  • Collaborate with management and senior staff to develop new DOE and external partner business funding opportunities in the area of hydropower research.
  • Execute major hydropower projects and/or programs in a project leadership role.
  • Develop external funding sources, including new engineering projects.
  • Participate in the commercialization of results as required.
  • Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations; present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings.
  • Lead engineering activities, in both DOE program and other relevant areas.
  • Interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients.
  • Follow all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Demonstrate leadership in several areas of team, task, or project lead responsibilities of complex and/or impactful projects.
  • Have a broad knowledge of procedures and techniques as applied to the deployment of hydropower technologies.

Relevant Ph.D. and 4-9 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7-12 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9-14 or more years of experience.

For Researcher V
Relevant Ph.D. and 9 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience.
