The Role
The VP Security Development owns the full technology and service lifecycle of all security products and services offered by Lumen to its customers, spanning consumer through enterprise and local government through federal. This includes the ideation, development, and ongoing maintenance of products and services, as well as the operational delivery and full service of customers that purchase those products. In addition, this role has leadership of the Black Lotus Labs threat intelligence team and its underlying programs, to develop unique intelligence around threats and actors that seek to harm the internet, Lumen, or its customers. With this set of responsibilities, this leader is expected to drive innovation, represent the company as a security brand externally to customers and the public, protect Lumen's customers and the internal company itself, and help drive above market revenue growth of security products and services.
The Main Responsibilities
This role has leadership of four distinct focuses:
• Technology creation
o Develop and maintain a technology vision and execute upon that vision to develop and maintain market viable security technology that uniquely solves security problems for Lumen's customers.
o Drive the right balance of custom built and purchased technology to maintain a balance of time-to-market, competitive differentiation, and above market profitable revenue growth.
o Lead company-wide prioritization of security development with Product Management, Product Growth Teams, IT, and Network Engineering leadership to ensure the right priorities are being developed and integrated into other services that Lumen offers
• Service execution
o Develop and lead operational metric-driven capabilities that monitor threats against Lumen's customers to prevent attacks and provide value-add billed services
o Act as a customer executive point of contact when service issues arise or attacks are not prevented, ensuring customer retention and minimizing Lumen's liability.
o Ensure a strong talent funnel and a high staff retention rate ina competitive hiring environment.
o Deliver these same advanced services to Lumen itself, to protect Lumen's corporate employees and data, and operate a highly effective program that reduces risk for the corporation
o Execute these same services in both the private and public sector, including the US government classified space, comfortably operating within the increased security constructs inherent to this environment.
• Threat intelligence
o Operate an internet scale threat intelligence program known as Black Lotus Labs, using Lumen's internet visibility to create insight and action in to threats on the internet to which other organizations do not have visibility
o Use this data to differentiate the entire security product and services portfolio, as well as protect Lumen from both criminal and foreign government attackers
o Guide the team through working collaboratively with marketing and PR to publish and publicly share this data through blogs, tweets, whitepapers, and public speaking with the security market in order to solidify a place amongst the small number of security companies that have this visibility and capability
• Internal and external thought leader
o Be Lumen's customer and press facing technology expert on security, speaking about where threats are coming from, where security technology or operations are going, and how Lumen's technology and services can help.
o Be the public face of Black Lotus Labs, speaking with domain expertise about the current malware campaigns and actor methodologies Lumen tracks. Ensure that the Lumen and Black Lotus Labs' names are known through podcasts, press coverage, guest speaking, and other public facing events to name recognition in the security market.
o Ensure the company has a clearly understood technology vision for sales and leadership to use that positions Lumen's leadership in the security market.
o Support sales as a senior technology leader by directly helping to win opportunities and maintain customer relationships for growth in and outside of the security product and services area.
What We Look For in a Candidate
Strong applicants for this position will have:
• Direct experience leading multiple security engineering and operations teams
• Architect-level knowledge of security technology and its current uses
• Threat intelligence experience and working knowledge of the current threat landscape
• Strong public speaking skills, with experience explaining topics in high and low levels of detail
• Market understanding of the security market and an ability to translate that into product and services creation
• A strong people leader with a background of building teams and leading large technology organizations in fast-paced and competitive markets
• A proven track record of producing revenue results by bringing innovative security products to market
• A self-driven ability to create a direction, receive executive buy-in, and drive its execution across cross-functional teams
• Experience working with customers to sell and convey value in security products and services
• Comfort with managing multi-million dollar budgets and negotiating large purchase agreements with third party vendors
• Experience working in classified programs with the US government
• A love of security and an internal drive to make a difference in the space
Desired experience:
• 10+ years of people management, with experience building and managing multi-tiered teams
• 15+ years in technology related roles, focused on software, engineering, telecommunications, or security
• M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent knowledge and work experience
• 7+ years working in an MSSP or service provider environment
• Multiple public speaking examples presenting complex security topics to various audiences
• Ability to get government security clearances

This position is eligible for either short-term incentives or sales compensation. Director and VP positions also are eligible for long-term incentive.
