Overview:
This applicant for the position of Fiber Optic splicer needs to competently read blueprints / design prints and must be familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Bluebeam) and with email usage. Establishes fiber networks by running, terminating, and splicing fiber cables; installing telecommunications equipment, splitters, switches, multiplexors, cable trays, and racked systems. Complete, assist, accomplish, and oversee quality control to ensure all work quality related to each project. Will assume full responsibility for job standards and timeliness. Leads by example, and directs, motivates, assists to accurately complete all projects assigned.
This applicant must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and documented), attention to detail, customer service skills and be willing to face issues in a positive manner, troubleshoot remotely and resolve day to day conflicts as they arise. Responsible for professional reporting, time sheets, billing and material slips as required for this position in a timely manner. This individual must assume personal responsibility for the overall safety, job sites, customer, OSHA, DOT, and company policy and procedures.
The position has physical requirements lifting up to 75 pounds, sitting, standing, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time in all types of conditions. Ability to accurately distinguish all 12 colors and various shades used in telecommunication systems. Ability to safely and securely work aloft from platforms, telephone poles, ladders and bucket trucks.
Requirements:
- A valid driver's license is required. Possible exceptions can be made with the ability to obtain after employment.
- Must be 21 years old to operate company equipment & vehicles.
- Subject to review but must submit to full driving record, federal and state information and criminal background checks.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment and random company drug screening.
- Must be able to attend and pass all company required training as needed.
- May be required to work over-time, after hours, extended shifts, holidays and/or weekends for emergencies and/or be on-call as needed to ensure work is completed.
- May be required to travel in state or out of state for overnight work as necessary to meet business and job requirements.
- Regular and timely attendance is an essential function of this position.
Qualifications:
Splicing positions are split between three levels based upon skill set
Apprentice/Entry level
- Understanding of or ability to learn basic splicing principles and procedures.
- Ability to learn and distinguish the standard 12 color code system for fiber.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Possesses strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with clients, managers and customers.
- Proficient computer, application and digital management skills
- Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements to maintain a successful safety record
- Assume all tasks and duties as assigned.
- Any combination of documented education and/or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the designated job duties and responsibilities of this position.
Intermediate level
- 1 or more years of fiber splicing experience
- All requirements of Apprentice level position
- Knowledge of local Outside Plant telecom/cable facilities and fiber networks
- Ability to independently build, prep, splice, tag and test new cables to meet carrier/national requirements.
- Experience in reading and interpreting engineering and CAD work prints
- Working knowledge of fiber theory, properties and terminology
- Experience splicing ISP/OSP fiber optics (various splice connectors / fusion machines)
- Assist other technical personnel in the performance of their duties when requested.
- Ability to distinguish between different cable types (i.e., telecommunication, electrical, fiber, CATV, etc.)
- Working knowledge of various test equipment (OTDR/VFL and power meter operations)
Advanced Level
- 2 or more years of fiber splicing experience and all requirements of Intermediate level position
- Proficient with hot cuts, maintenance window, CO/NOC communications
- Experienced splicing loose tube, ribbon and ribbonizing cables up to 864.
- Experience to matrix/re-design prints, build cable records, cut sheets and as-builts.
- Proficient with use and maintenance of optical splicing and test equipment (OTDR, OLTS, VFL, OPM)
- Knowledge of splice trays, organizers, cabinets, closures and storage units
- Copper or Coax splicing, troubleshooting experience preferred.
- Ability to understand and troubleshoot various fiber architecture including DWDM, CWDM mux/splitters and equipment.
- Proven leadership experience to assist and direct workflow to produce the highest quality results.
- This position may also include work or employee direction, coordination and oversight responsibilities.
