Job type: fulltime

Job industry: Banking & Financial Services

Job description

Entergrid trades in wholesale electricity markets using physical and statistical models. We participate in many nodal power markets, with an emphasis on congestion trading and near-term futures markets.

With this position we are looking for a candidate that knows both power systems and has strong data analysis skills. The Power Systems Analyst would join our team and use Optimal Power Flow (OPF) models and statistical methods to help develop trading strategies that predict electricity market prices. Hence, experience with OPF models or electricity market simulation tools (DAYZER, Gridview, Powerworld, GE MAPS, etc) is strongly desired, but can be substituted with a deep academic understanding of power flow and power economics.

The Power Systems Analyst will help perform and develop transmission analyses to identify short and long term congestion risks and opportunities to improve our trading business. Since we are a technology-focused firm, candidates should be proficient Python or R programmers, and have a commitment to good software engineering principles. Experience with various python-based data science tools (eg: numpy, pandas, scipy) is extremely useful. Most importantly, candidates should have a desire to work in a small-company environment, using software to solve hard problems.

This job is in the Lafayette, Colorado office (close to Denver and Boulder). We have a strong preference for being onsite. But, depending on the candidate, the location may be remote. If the location is remote, travel to Lafayette, CO to connect with the team will be required approximately every six to eight weeks. We have a vaccine mandate for being in the office.

Activities:

  • Research and modeling of electricity market supply, demand and grid congestion fundamentals for trading
  • Implement systematic congestion analysis and valuation using optimal power flow tools
  • Build and manage optimization and statistical models to predict electricity market prices and identify potential trading opportunities
  • Research into the fundamental parts (shadow prices, LODF, shift factors, analysis of the generation and load pockets that impact flows across the constraint, etc.) of the constraints that are predicted by the power flow model, leading to recommendations regarding a trading strategy and/or portfolio in the day ahead virtual markets.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of the generation, load, and transmission data being used in the OPF analysis to ensure quality results
  • Participate in monthly, annual, and long term FTR auctions in MISO, ERCOT, PJM and various other energy markets.

Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Energy Economics, Statistics, Finance or other related fields.
  • 2-5 years of experience with Optimal Power Flow (OPF) models and wholesale electricity market simulation tools (e.g., Dayzer, Powerworld, Gridview, PSS/E, PROMOD). Relevant academic experience can be substituted in lieu of work experience.
  • A deep understanding of the input data that is used in power flow models & economic dispatch models.
  • Knowledge of ISO operations is a plus. Previous work experience with an Independent System Operator (ISO) would be excellent.
  • 2+ years of experience in managing and analyzing large scale structured and unstructured data using Python (eg: pandas) or R
  • Machine Learning methodologies and software packages

Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the US
