Job description
Nuvance Health has a network of convenient hospital and outpatient locations - Danbury Hospital, New Milford Hospital, Norwalk Hospital and Sharon Hospital in Connecticut, and Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital Center and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in New York - plus multiple primary and specialty care physician practices locations, including The Heart Center, a leading provider of cardiology care, and two urgent care offices. Non-acute care is offered through various affiliates, including the Thompson House for rehabilitation and skilled nursing services, and the Home Care organizations.

The coordination and alignment of educational programs and research activities advance our long-term strategic goals by adapting curricula to a rapidly changing clinical environment, leveraging new healthcare providers to adopt innovative care models and setting new standards in care delivery.
The proposed position promotes our commitment to excellence by developing shared learning environments and setting high standards for training ethical, highly competent clinicians, equipping them with the skills to work in the integrated care teams of the future. Among other goals, this position can help attract and retain community-focused, academically-oriented clinicians who are fully aligned with Nuvance Health's mission.
In addition, health systems with access to diverse patient populations are well-positioned to conduct significant, extramural-funded basic, translational, and clinical research in real-world settings using study subjects more reflective of society. The emergence of health system sciences, an area of research increasingly being supported by funding organizations, can have a considerable and immediate impact on the quality of our care delivery, the safety of patients and staff, and clinical outcomes.
Scope:
The Chief Academic Officer will be responsible for directing and overseeing all educational, scholarly, and research activities across the system to position the organization as an innovative leader in delivering cutting-edge clinical services and developing a well-trained workforce. Using a data-driven approach, the CAO will lead programs, initiatives, and activities that support education, professional development, and clinical investigations. They will bring thought leadership in these areas to ensure that Nuvance Health trains excellent clinicians (including physicians, nurse practitioners and other health care workers directly involved in patient care) and investigators prepared to adapt to dramatic changes in society, capitalizing on emerging technologies and the ability to apply new scientific discoveries. The incumbent will also explore opportunities to support faculty development and build academic partnerships to enhance academic activities across the system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Serves as system leader for all operational aspects of graduate/undergraduate medical education, global health and research programs, including academic partnerships and affiliations.
* Oversees the infrastructure to support the academic mission using multiple inputs to drive performance, creating clinical learning environments to model a culture of collaboration and shared purpose. Engages and energizes the entire Nuvance Health community in a spirit of shared responsibility, visibly celebrating successes and accomplishments of trainees, faculty, and others. Supports efforts to facilitate team-based care and inter-professional training as a focused academic endeavor to support outstanding clinical care.
* Advances academic activities as one of Nuvance Health's essential, inter-woven missions and sets an inspiring vision for the organization determining institutional priorities for academic program development and soliciting input from a broad range of stakeholders consistent with Nuvance Health's mission, vision, values, and goals.
* Serves as a key leader and member of the executive team while maintaining a significant external presence through engagement in numerous national and regional initiatives and organizations outside their formal duties to elevate Nuvance Health's status as a credible and innovative teaching and research organization, including AAMC COTH.
* Facilitates and supports the resident and fellows matching programs to recruit the highest quality applicants to our training programs.
* Collaborates with system leaders and partners to grow and monitor the cost-effectiveness academic programs, developing strategies and KPIs for performance improvement. Oversees data collection, analytics, reporting, and data governance related to Nuvance Health's educational and academic priorities.
* Explores potential opportunities for GME activities with Nuvance Health Global Health program to export our medical education curricula to lower-resourced countries in need. Supports Nuvance Health Care Excellence by leveraging the community of health services researchers and other experts to address the social determinants of health and improve the health of the populations we serve.
* Oversees an Office of Clinical Research to support a wide range of research and clinical trials across Nuvance Health to promote and support researchers along the entire continuum of research from discovery to commercialization, while partnering with industry and other organizations to conduct sponsored clinical trials.
* Facilitates opportunities to compete for extramural funds to support cutting-edge, innovative research, the acquisition of new technologies, and the creation of intellectual property across disciplines and fields and oversees the efforts and work of the Rudy Ruggles Biomedical Research facility. Coordinates and disseminates funding RFPs and results of intramural and multi-institutional research.
* Champions equity, diversity, and inclusion in health professional education and research activities and creates value by fostering a climate of excellence and diversity of thought.
* Emphasizes a culture of life-long learning and develops innovative modes of training and faculty development in an atmosphere of collegiality, respect, and cooperation.
* Acts as the organization's primary representative for the ACGME and other accrediting bodies to ensure that Nuvance Health exceeds all applicable professional, educational, accreditation, and regulatory standards to support the clinical workforce and improve patient outcomes.
* Facilitates recruiting talented, effective teaching and research faculty and develop new initiatives emerging from Nuvance Health's strategic plan, working collaboratively with system and hospital leaders, stakeholders, and partner organizations. Develops and supports the communities of teachers, researchers, biostatisticians, and other scholars throughout Nuvance Health, promoting the sharing of ideas and resources and leveraging potential economies of scale.
* Establishes standards, policies, and other activities for graduate and undergraduate medical education, including legal and immigration issues which are currently managed at the local level.
* Develops relationships with medical, nursing and other professional schools, research centers, and other institutions of higher learning to exchange ideas and partner on a variety of projects related to medical education and training, faculty development, and clinical research
* Develops training and simulation standards for skills-based (diagnostic and procedural) and non-technical skills training of residents (e.g. Effective communication, Crisis-Management Simulation).
* Oversees and coordinates scholarly work products including publications and presentations to assure compliance with research integrity standards in alignment with Nuvance Health's mission.
* Oversees and coordinates the network-wide research infrastructure, including databases and disease registries, and compliance program to ensure optimal use and compliance using responsible data management practices.
* Oversees and coordinates local IRBs, and explores centralizing their functions where appropriate.
* Develops shared resources for Faculty Development for training programs (an increasing focus of the ACGME) while overseeing the Patricia A. Tietjen Teaching Academy.
* Advocates for increased GME funding and public policies at the state and federal levels to support workforce and healthcare education funding.
* Develops, expands, and promotes resident physician wellness formation and leadership training programs.
* Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE MD/DO degree from an accredited school and active state physician license to practice in CT and NY required. Certification in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred. EXPERIENCE Minimum of 10 years' experience in healthcare management and/or medical education leadership in an academic medical center is required. Minimum of 10 years of direct clinical experience required. Progressive management experience in hospital administration, including prior experience in a hospital senior leadership role is required. Proven experience and demonstrated record in leading large-scale organizational change initiatives. Highly collaborative leader successful in leading complex high-performing multidisciplinary teams. Skilled in innovation and data-driven performance improvement and process redesign.
