Job description

The Design and Photo Editor develops and enhances design for K of C communications content. This includes assisting in the design and production of K of C editorial content, including Columbia, the Order's flagship magazine, and other print and digital publications. In addition, the Design and Photo Editor works to acquire original photos and other images, helping to plan, select and prepare visual content for publication.

Responsibilities:

* Develop and execute a visual plan, based on consultation with and instructions from editorial team, for print and digital publications, as well as social media and other content.
* Coordinate original photo assignments and image acquisition to accompany print and digital K of C content, working closely with editorial staff and also consulting with the director of digital media and others.
* Lay out and format text and images, following best practices and revising to meet needs, expectations and design standards.
* After initial print design is complete, lay out translated content and prepare for foreign language publication.
* Collect and prepare files for publishing and archiving.
* Ensure projects meet objectives and deadlines.
* Listen to feedback to hone skills and improve design.
* Perform related duties as needed.

Skill Qualifications:

* Knowledge of and experience in design of visuals for use in print, on web and in social media
* Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat
* Appreciation of how to best present the Order's image, its priorities and its values
* A good eye and judgment; ability to interpret desired outcomes and deliver a product that fits needs and vision
* Time-management skills; ability to handle tight deadlines
* Strong verbal and written communications skills required for regular correspondence with staff, clients and contributing photographers
* Independent thought required for introducing innovative designs and asserting opinions about concepts and look/feel
* Microsoft Office; Mac O/S
* Attention to detail, precision and consistency
* Collaborative

Education and Experience Qualifications

Required:

* BA or BS degree with emphasis in Graphic Design or related field
* 5-7 years related design and photography experience including 3-5 years of computer-aided layout and image creation or equivalent combination of training and experience

* Must be able to remain in a stationary position for a majority of the workday.
