Brief Description of Duties
The Chair of Health, Nursing, and Nutrition (HNN) provides administrative oversight and programmatic guidance for an interdisciplinary group of academic programs focused on community health and wellness and nutrition. S/he is expected to teach (reduced teaching load), support recruitment and retention, evaluate Faculty and staff, engage students in the college's community outreach and education programs as outlined in the University's strategic plan, and build and maintain effective partnerships with a specific focus on aligning HNN academic programs with community health and wellness and nutrition. This appointment is tenure-track and rank (Associate/Professor) will be based on the incumbent's record of accomplishments and experience.
- Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCoordinates and oversees the administrative processes in Department of HNN.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates HNN academic programs to meet the standards of the university, regional (Middle States) and programmatic (ACEN and ACEND) accreditors.
- Adheres to university deadlines, policies, and procedures regarding collective bargaining and faculty evaluation.
- Develop performance management approaches and goals evaluate assigned staff.
- Develops and maintains collaborative approaches to community health and wellness and nutrition by involving internal and external constituencies in program planning and design.
- Utilizes a variety of delivery models to provide access to HNN educational programs.
- Works with HNN students and CAUSES colleagues to plan and implement evidence-based research projects.
- Fosters leadership development opportunities and opportunities for practicing and implementing leadership skills and networks with professionals and agencies to serve the needs of students and community clients.
- Maintains and completes required reports including budgets, plans of work, reports of faculty goals and objectives, workload declaration, accomplishments, faculty evaluation and other documentation needed for program effectiveness.
- Assists in identifying funding sources to support the expansion and improvement of nutrition, food security, and health programming.
Other Duties
- Works effectively and collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, CAUSES Dean, and Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health, and other UDC units as needed.
- Serves as a resource within the UDC campus and the DC community for public policy decision making related to health and wellness and nutrition.
- Monitors and evaluates demographic trends for use in the development of graduate programs, improvement of HHN undergraduate programs, and integrating community education programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to nutrition and health and other needs of the college, university and community.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Ph.D. degree in a Health, Nursing of Nutrition and Dietetics-related discipline (e.g., nursing, nutrition and dietetics, public health) granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Multidisciplinary experience preferred.
- Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and problem-solving skills.
- A track-record of experience in increasingly responsible leadership in the field of health and wellness, nutrition and/or dietetics. Teaching and research experience; program planning experience desired.
- A proven commitment to continuous process improvement and proactive, outcomes-oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
- A valid driver's license to travel within the district as needed for community education and student supervision purposes.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following
qualifications:
- An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
- A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
- At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.
