Life Sciences and Health Care Industry Sector
Our world-renowned Life Sciences and Health Care Industry Sector Team comprises more than 500 lawyers around the world who advise more than 1,000 clients spanning pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, medical devices and technology, digital health, as well as health care providers, payors, and services. From creation to commercialization of a life-saving therapy, regulatory compliance to an international patent dispute, the formation of a strategic alliance to a complex, global merger, our industry team works together seamlessly across geographies and practice areas to advise clients on business-critical issues across the life cycle of the business and its products, including in cutting-edge fields such as cell and gene therapies and digital health.
Knowledge plays a vital role at Hogan Lovells. The strategic purpose of the Knowledge Management team is to ensure that all those involved in delivering legal advice to clients have access to the knowledge and information they require to deliver a technically excellent, efficient service; to devise new and innovative ways of sharing that knowledge with clients as part of client relationship management; to input knowledge into the firm's continuous process improvement initiatives around legal service delivery; and to ensure that the firm is harnessing new technology to support those objectives.
Reporting
Direct line reporting is the Life Sciences and Health Care Knowledge Partner and a dotted line into the Regional Head of Knowledge. This role will work closely with the Life Sciences and Health Care Global Co-Heads, Working Group Heads, and Marketing & Business Development Manager to develop a knowledge strategy for the sector.
Location
This role may be located in the firm's Baltimore, Boston, New York, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia or Washington, DC office.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
Knowledge Strategy:
* Support the development, implementation and communication of a knowledge strategy for the sector in support of its business plan and in alignment with the related regulatory practices, working closely with the Life Sciences and Health Care Knowledge Partner, Regional Head of Knowledge and other key stakeholders.
* Help develop a "knowledge-first" culture within the group and promote the sharing and dissemination of know-how within the team.
* Participate in global, central knowledge projects and initiatives as and when required.
* Help to bring efficiencies to the group's practice of law, e.g., explore and pilot relevant legal technology/AI products, assist with legal process improvement and legal project management to improve the group's ability to service its clients efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
Current Awareness and Thought Leadership:
* Research, monitor and analyse legal, market and industry developments and trends, considering how they will affect the overall sector, related working groups, and its clients.
* Draft and coordinate current awareness updates, client alerts, submissions to public consultations and other thought leadership publications.
* Identify key legal developments and "hot topics" that provide an opportunity to showcase the firm's experience and insight via client alerts, pitches, directory and award submissions, webinars, seminars, article submissions, opportunities to pitch to the press and other client-facing collateral; provide the legal research and legal technical content needed to produce such products.
* Assist with the group's efforts to find innovative ways of using its knowledge to add value to key client relationships by providing timely material to facilitate frequent interactions with clients.
* Help the group to develop new legal products, identify possible new services and innovative and efficient ways of working.
Relationship Building:
Lawyers
* Develop relationships with lawyers who have experience relevant to the group and facilitate the sharing of quality knowledge and experience.
* Respond to queries from lawyers and track queries to identify knowledge and training needs.
* Introduce lawyers joining the group to the group's knowledge resources.
Firmwide Community
* Coordinate with other Knowledge Lawyers supporting the group and with Knowledge Lawyers supporting other practice/industry sector groups, sharing knowledge and best practices and encouraging the alignment of the group's knowledge plans with those of other groups.
* Participate in knowledge community initiatives.
* Follow and encourage global practices and standards.
* Help to establish a knowledge sharing culture within the firm and the group.
* Develop and promote the firm's knowledge systems and processes within the group and liaise with lawyers to gather feedback.
* Collaborate with the business services' departments, including Marketing & Business Development, Learning & Development, Research Services and IT.
Client-facing work
* Collaborate with Partners, Marketing & Business Development and PR to identify opportunities to generate business from new and existing clients through articles, briefing notes, client events, knowledge products.
* Provide direct support to clients in respect of knowledge management issues and/or value-add services.
Legal Knowledge:
Documents
* Assist with the collection, drafting, maintenance, automation and updating of the group's knowledge, particularly model documents and sample documents, to ensure that a comprehensive set of first class knowledge materials is accessible to all lawyers in the group.
* Manage the group's knowledge pages on the firm's intranet and other knowledge repositories, ensuring they are in line with firm standards, structured in an easily accessible way and kept up to date.
Training
* Help to ensure accessibility of high quality training materials by developing, coordinating, preparing, delivering and capturing training.
* Assist lawyers with preparation of materials for internal and external training events.
Experience Required
* Minimum of 10 years of practice experience at a law firm or equivalent, with extensive substantive knowledge in one or more legal areas impacting the life sciences industry (e.g., corporate, litigation, intellectual property, licensing).
* Ability to coordinate across multiple legal specialties and multiple jurisdictions for a holistic approach to industry issues is recommended and preferred.
* Industry-specific experience with life sciences clients, companies, associations. publications is preferred.
