POSITION SUMMARY:
WC Smith has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Director of Risk Management to join its leadership team. The successful candidate will serve as a strategic partner by providing expert advisory services and leading the firm's overall risk management function including insurance, claims, and safety. This position is located in the Capitol Riverfront area, steps away from the Navy Yard metro.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implements enterprise-wide risk management policies, procedures, and business practices across all divisions (development, construction, property management, and all subsidiary and affiliate companies) and further develops and advises management on appropriate risk management techniques to address identified exposures. Implements improvements and efficiencies, where appropriate and necessary.
- Partners with wide variety of enterprise-wide stakeholders, including executive leadership, management, and department heads, in aggregating, analyzing, and organizing pertinent underwriting data to procure and place all applicable insurance coverage sufficient to cover addressed exposures.
- Manages multiple diverse and complex property/casualty insurance programs with various renewal dates throughout the calendar year. Coverage lines include, but are not limited to, property and general liability, commercial fleet, workers compensation, umbrella and excess, and wide variety of management liability lines, each applicable to the various divisions (development, construction, property management, etc.)
- Partners closely with all levels of firm's insurance brokers on all manner of policy administration, including, but not limited to:
- Accurate and timely policy renewals
- Assessing of available coverage extensions, endorsements, and exclusions and applies to programs accordingly, based on firm's risk appetite and market availability
- Accurate and timely issuance of insurance certificates to all firm partners, chiefly firm lending and banking relationships
- Accurate and timely response to carrier loss control requests and recommendations. Attend loss control site walks when appropriate and subject to availability.
- Review, analyze, and approve all insurance invoice and billing documentation and confirm payment with accounting partners.
- Claims Oversight (primary responsibility of Risk Analyst)
- Confirm timely reporting of all property/casualty claims, confirm accurate representation of firm's interests with carriers, and confirm timely and accurate claims payout. Provides strategic guidance, direction, and feedback to Risk Analyst as it relates to claims administration and develops goals and metrics of success for Analyst.
- Assumes responsibility for in-house oversight and adjusting of more complex property/casualty claims (in excess of certain dollar amount)
- Assumes principal responsibility for any casualty claims which proceed to litigation. Primary contact for firm's defense counsel. Acts as primary liaison between all internal stakeholders, defense counsel, and firm adjusters during litigation phase. Coordinates with casualty adjusters in seeing cases through to final and acceptable settlement. Assists in cases which proceed to trial, where appropriate and necessary.
- Contractual Risk Transfer:
- Enterprise-wide contract advisory, negotiation, and guidance commensurate to firm's exposures and risk appetite, in addition to market trends, and applicable law.
- Provides high level feedback, revision and mark-up, and consultation to all firm stakeholders for a wide variety of contracts commonly found on development and construction projects.
- Data Analysis
- Continues development of in-house loss database, developing root-cause analysis, leading and lagging indicators, and trends in losses to target training and risk mitigation accordingly.
- Analysis of firm's total cost of risk (TCoR) and developing of strategies and techniques to reduce overall TCoR.
- As directed and guided, partner with appropriate third parties to explore and develop alternative risk financing techniques. Report on findings to firm leadership.
- Oversight of third-party risk exposures (primary responsibility of Risk Analyst) to provide ongoing guidance on risk mitigation, transfer, and avoidance techniques to minimize firm's TCoR.
- Oversight of strategic partnership with firm accounting department in management of third-party vendor/contractor insurance verification and compliance (primary responsibility of Risk Analyst).
- Analyzes and reports on insurance market trends and developments; benchmarks company insurance costs to industry.
- Provides advice and counsel to the management team on topics like workplace safety, quality assurance, risk management trends, and strategic planning.
CAREER EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree required. (Candidates without a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years risk management experience will be considered).
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a brokerage or corporate risk management role performing duties similar to those outlined above.
- Background in real estate development, construction and property management risk management principles and practices required.
- Must possess contractual risk transfer experience and exposure. Knowledge of AIA contract templates a plus.
- Strong foundational knowledge of common commercial insurance provisions, coverage forms, extensions, and endorsements most commonly found in commercial policies covering real estate development and construction exposures strongly desired.
