Job description

The Director of Patient Affordability Solutions interacts and aligns with various individuals and teams internally, including but not limited to business unit leaders across commercial and national account teams, brand, corporate and government affairs, market access marketing, finance, and analytics. This position will assist in the development and ongoing support of brand patient assistance strategy as well as oversee Otsuka operations and considerations for co-pay support design. The Director will rely on her/his extensive experience to engage in patient assistance program strategic development, monitoring, implementation, and risk management. Additionally, the director will engage with various stakeholders (e.g., external customers, co-pay card vendors) to assist in the negotiation of key contract provisions, analysis of key data, and identification of risks and mitigation solutions.

The Director will focus on developing, managing, monitoring, and communicating Otsuka's positions on patient affordability services and portfolio business functions for co-pay support to commercial patients. The Director will also serve as an in-house expert responsible for identifying the impact of co-pay adjustment programs on Otsuka's brands and patients, working with external customers to monitor risk and develop solutions, and ensuring brand collaboration for program design. The Director will ultimately be responsible for furthering the reach of our commercial co-pay card programs while reducing the financial impacts on patients, providers, and the company. To achieve this, the Director will lead a cross-functional/matrix team of internal stakeholders to drive alignment of business units and brand teams to deliver insights and operationalize affordability solutions for customer-facing functions and co-pay business vendors.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead and align with members of the Otsuka patient affordability governance structure to communicate developments in the co-pay support space as well as define patient affordability solutions at the brand, company, state, and federal level
  • Work in partnership with brand teams to develop strategies that are aligned to the brand commercial and patient access plan
  • Monitor and analyze Otsuka's key performance metrics for each brand and track co-pay support utilization trends.
  • Evaluate and analyze patient service program quality and metrics, including partnering with hub and co-pay program vendors to create customer models and provide insights on the best model to execute
  • Provide accountability for vendor communication and proactive engagement regarding program design, execution, and performance
  • Ensure vendors are contractually aligned and vendor data delivery is active and up-to-date
  • Facilitate communication and alignment between brand teams and hub/co-pay program vendors
  • Manage external co-pay card vendors and monitor the development of modeling tools to accurately track and predict co-pay card usage and future outlays for each brand
  • Support the development, execution, and verification of contracts with vendors to ensure optimal service delivery, including development of business rules, key performance indicators, and service-level agreements
  • Oversee operational, legal, and strategic considerations around standing up internal or external patient support service capabilities, including facilitation of field-based team program development/optimization and team training
  • Analyze shifts in policy, regulations, and guidance developments the impact the ability for manufacturer and third-party clients to operationalize patient affordability services
  • Provide insights into the calculation and impact of co-pay support services on gross-to-net, net pricing capabilities, and overall profitability, including budget management, program profitability, and how these investments inform broader brand planning
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to evaluate brand co-pay programs and advance potential solutions ideas for risk mitigation
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on development of strategy and tactical planning
  • Collaborate with channel team and PBM team to ensure accounting of Otsuka's interests in important market environments
  • Develop briefing materials for leadership teams relating to brand co-pay programs that impact Otsuka brands and co-pay programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Advanced degree preferred (MBA or equivalent degree)
  • Minimum of 5 + years of relevant industry experience, primarily in healthcare, including working with co-pay programs, PBMs, patient access or in a similar role for life sciences industry
  • Previous experience in market access, patient support services, co-pay program and patient financial assistance management
  • Ability to effectively communicate and deliver expertise on patient affordability program design and risk mitigation through collaborative work with the corporate leadership team, brand teams, and other key functional groups
  • Demonstrated track record of strong advocacy and communication skills
  • In depth understanding of healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry issues, as well as relevant legal and regulatory requirement
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and financial acumen to convey pertinent information, issues, reports, and other deliverables clearly and effectively
  • Ability to build trust and cultivate relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills and ability to construct complex financial input/output models in Excel or other
  • Travel flexibility as needed
