Job description

Research Analyst - Mid level - Costa Mesa, Southern California

Responsibilities:

  • Industry Research: Prepare analysis and research presentations for the group. Actively read and seek out new information sources to stay abreast of industry trends
  • Financial Analysis: Prepare valuations for current and pipeline opportunities including DCF, public and private comparable and transaction analysis, in addition to waterfall analysis
  • Deal Structuring: Assist with deal structuring and the evaluation of term sheets, model economic impact and Cap Table understanding
  • Diligence: Prepare and present investment memos and pitch decks for new and follow-on investments based on fundamental analysis and market research
  • Value Creation: Support portfolio company management teams to develop corporate strategy, evaluate M&A opportunities, assess new business lines, and other projects as needed
  • Portfolio Monitoring: Monitor current investments and track key metrics and company performance
  • Provide due diligence and quantitative financial support for potential investments with activities ranging from financial modeling to testing products to customer validation
  • Writing investment memos, and assembling reports for investors
  • Coordinate outreach to target investments. May conduct initial diligence calls
  • Design and execute self-directed projects that help portfolio companies

Qualifications:

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills
  • Ability to ramp quickly on subject matter and synthesize salient information into succinct verbal and written communication
  • Deep understanding of valuation and financial modeling (LBOs, liquidation waterfalls, cap tables, DCF, etc.) and a high level of proficiency in Excel to complete this work accurately
  • A strong passion for investing and evaluating investment opportunities both quantitatively and qualitatively
  • High level of proficiency in PowerPoint to distill information / key concepts into presentation format
  • Strong attention to detail
  • A strong sense of urgency and self-motivation to work autonomously
  • Limitless curiosity about business models and understanding of how companies make money
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and written skills

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • A bachelor's degree or MBA in Finance, Business or related field
  • Experience of at least 6-8 years as Research Analyst or Investment Analyst or related title
  • Previous experience and knowledge of finance and technology acquired through working at a tech startup, consulting firm, investment bank, and/or other venture capital/private equity firm
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with entrepreneurs and investor groups from diverse backgrounds
