Responsibilities
The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is the Federal Government's interagency program for coordinating research and development (R&D) and enhancing communication and collaboration in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. Twenty Federal departments and independent agencies participate in the NNI and individually and cooperatively expedite the discovery, development, and deployment of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology to serve the public good.
The NNI R&D Program is facilitated and coordinated by the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee, which reports through the Committee on Technology to the Cabinet-level National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) supports the NSET Subcommittee and all aspects of operations and development of the NNI. NSF is a participating member of the NSET Subcommittee and serves as the administrative host agency for the NNCOs AAAS S&T Policy Fellow.
The NNCO acts as the primary point of contact for information on the NNI; provides technical and administrative support to the NSET Subcommittee, including the preparation of multiagency planning, budget, and assessment documents; develops, updates, and maintains the NNI website ; and provides public outreach on behalf of the NNI.
At the NNCO, staff scientist will interact with policy makers and scientists from the 20 Federal agencies involved in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) as well as the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) within the Executive Office of the President. Nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize nearly every aspect of our lives. Staff Scientist will have the opportunity to experience the impact of this nanotechnology across many fields, disciplines, and application areas by participating in broad, high-level nanotechnology policy discussions; working with the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) within the Executive Office of the President, and with the 20 Federal departments and independent agencies and commissions participating in the NNI; and managing high-visibility interagency projects and planning national workshops.
Responsibilities will/may include the following:
- Providing technical analysis as requested by the Directors of the NNCO and/or the NSET Working Groups and Coordinators;
- Assisting in the coordination of the interagency communities of interest in areas such as nanosensors;
- Assisting in the coordination of activities in support of NSET and its working group (environmental and health implications), and coordinators (environmental, health, and safety; international; and standards);
- Leading projects and/or teams focused on technical evaluation of the application of nanotechnology in critical key areas such as water, future computing, and medicine;
- Researching and documenting NNI scientific and economic impacts and accomplishments; and
- Conducting outreach and facilitating discussions among communities of interest (including researchers, entrepreneurs, teachers and students).
Requires 8 to 10 years with BS/BA or 6 to 8 years with MS/MA or 3 to 5 years with PhD.
