Overview
We are seeking to recruit an analyst with a strong foundation in fundamental company and equity analysis who demonstrates an interest in having the opportunity to pivot between varied investment and research opportunities on the Bayview platform. As a member of a three-person portfolio management team, the primary role of the analyst will be to provide research coverage and contribution to equity investment idea generation across multiple non-bank verticals within the U.S. financial services and related sectors. Additionally, this person will help support equity trading and operational activities, and work closely with the team to evaluate potential corporate fixed income and preferred equity investments for Bayview's insurance affiliates. The investment team is primarily responsible for equity sleeves within multiple hedge funds and private equity-style drawdown funds managed by Bayview. The core mandate is to identify value-oriented, high conviction ideas with a potentially longer-term investment horizon. We manage a concentrated equity portfolio, with a primary focus on investment opportunities where Bayview has a differentiated perspective on fundamental business and stock drivers. This analyst role provides a unique opportunity to make a material, identifiable contribution to the success and growth of the public equities business at a well-established alternative asset management firm. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to conduct detailed fundamental analysis on companies and industries, be well organized and capable of adjusting in a dynamic investment environment, and show a willingness to learn and grow into a key investment role. The position will be based in either Miami or New York, which will be based on a combination of candidate preference, experience, and fit.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Diligence financial services and related companies for potential equity and debt investments, with a particular focus on mortgage finance, REITs, real estate services, BDCs and other non-bank sectors
- Build and maintain robust financial models on 30+ companies, provide primary coverage during earnings reporting season, and communicate relevant trends to portfolio team
- Take the primary lead on analyzing companies or industries that do not fit into Bayview's traditional verticals
- Autonomously work on new investment ideas while regularly communicating with the team on progress
- Help to create and maintain databases relevant to: the analysis of investible sectors and macro drivers, tracking and benchmarking portfolio performance, and trading activities
- Take a primary role in the diligence, negotiation, and closing process on potential corporate debt private placement transactions
- Serve as a primary point of contact for the equity team with respect to important trading and operational aspects of the equity business, including assisting with the management of prime broker relationships
- Work with senior professionals in other parts of Bayview on ad hoc projects
- Help to build out simple quantitative portfolio analytics using Bloomberg and other third-party services, with the goal of gaining better insight into new and existing equity investments, portfolio construction , and hedging strategies
- Impeccable attention to detail, including the ability to structure and maintain robust earnings models, as well as an understanding of how to use financial statements to create meaningful insights
- High level of inquisitiveness, including a willingness to dig deep into public filings and ask tough questions
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Experience researching financial services companies and/or relevant lateral sectors, including creating financial forecasts and valuing companies through multiple lenses
- Stong desire to become the resident expert on one or more equity subsectors
- Ability to think and work independently, while knowing when to ask questions
- Comfort working within a relatively flat organization where completing a task or project in a timely fashion is the driving goal
- Track record of professional and academic excellence
- At least some experience using Bloomberg, S&P Market Intelligence, and/or Capital IQ (or similar third-party data sources) is a plus
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Bachelor's Degree required; MBA or similar degree or CFA a plus;
- 3+ years of relevant buy-side, sell-side, or other experience covering financial services stocks, ideally with some exposure to small and midcap non-bank financial companies
- CFA, MBA or equivalent a plus
