Laboratory Technician III

Job Description:

Performs routine laboratory tests including DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, real time PCR, gel electrophoresis and purification, and interpretation of results for diagnostic purpose. Ability to analyze chromatogram for sequences obtained with sanger sequencing. Able to design, test and optimize primers for PCR and/or real-time PCR for infectious organisms. Sectioning of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue biopsies.

Assists a project leader with the development and implementation of research projects. Participates with others in the development of experiments; conducts experiments; analyzes and maintains detailed records of data and prepares written summaries of results for inclusion in reports and manuscripts; utilizes computers to generate graphics and statistical displays; may train graduate students, and part-time workers in standardized research techniques and analytical procedures; assists in ensuring availability of proper laboratory supplies and procures equipment and supplies as necessary; performs and schedules maintenance on research equipment; may maintain and update records of expenditures on project accounts and creates invoices for services provided by the lab; and performs other duties as required. Basic computer skills, ability to use computerized laboratory equipment, ability to maintain laboratory records and data/database. Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and technical equipment.

Commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area and four years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work independently, multi-task, demonstrated creativity and high motivation are highly desired.
* Additional qualifications (other than described in the position description) would be a plus: bioinformatics knowledge and ability to work with bioinformatics software for microbiome analysis; experience with immunohistochemistry, In situ hybridization, RNAscope and cell culture; and a publication record.
* Applicant must have a thorough knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
