Principal Responsibilities:

Job Title: Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructor

Department: Aquatics

Reports To: Aquatics Director

FLSA Status: Part-time

Job Summary and Qualifications:

Water Safety Instructors (WSIs) will teach students drowning prevention and water safety along with skills to prepare students for the sport of swimming.

Water safety according to the curriculum and standards of American Red Cross and AJSC

Water Safety Instructors (WSI) must have current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Certification through duration of employment.

Lifeguard Training (American Red Cross)

-CPR (American Red Cross)

-First Aid (American Red Cross)

-AED Training (American Red Cross)

Previous experience with an aquatics program is a plus.

Ability to relate to staff and members.

Must work well with varying age groups of children.

Previous experience with leading a swim lesson program a plus.

Must have patience and persistence.

Must have strong leadership and public relations skills.

Must have sound decision-making skills.

Must have the ability to maintain self-control in stressful situations.

Responsibilities:

1.Know, understand and follow all rules, policies and chain of command of the AJSC

2.Be responsible for safety of students and never leave a class unsupervised.

3.Communicate with customers in a professional manner. Refer any difficult situations to the manager.

4.Teach all classes according to the curriculum and standards AJSC

5.Ensure a positive learning environment while maintaining a sufficient level of class control.

6.Be familiar with the skills taught at each level of the Lessons

7.Assess abilities of students to ensure each student is placed in the appropriate level.

8.Demonstrate and evaluate skills, coordinating progress reports with Manager Input.

9.Be in the water, getting fully wet, with all classes.

10.Provide each student with both positive and constructive feedback.

11.Keep accurate attendance records and follow-up with manager regarding student absences.

12.Arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the first class on the first day and 15 minutes early on each succeeding day.

13.Start and end classes on time.

14.Meet state health department requirements for being in the pool.

15.Arrange for a qualified substitute for any absence.

16.Notify Coach Alina as to the reason for an absence and provide the name of the qualified staff person who will substitute.

17.Take ownership of substitute shifts. If unable to work once committed to a substitute shift, take responsibility to find another substitute.

18.Be responsible for maintenance and storage of equipment.

19.Complete all paperwork as required.

20.Maintain a professional appearance at all times. This includes wearing the proper uniform.

21.Have a full working knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and assist when necessary.

22.Exercise basic precautions to prevent disease transmission.

23.Document all accidents and incidents immediately.

24.Notify the supervisor when a potentially serious problem is noticed.

25.Attend all in-service trainings.

26.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Strong knowledge of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write short routine correspondence.Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and email group situations, and to other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Basic mathematical skills required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Ability to manage difficult or emotional members, responds promptly to customer needs.Responds to requests for assistance and service. Meets commitments. Interpersonal skills, maintains confidentiality, works with integrity, works well in a team setting.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

1.Observe all areas of the pool with clear vision.

2.Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.

3.Communicate effectively with people in normal, loud and stressful situations, including projecting one's voice across distance.

4.Support child and/or adult body weight in the water.

5.Previous professional experience with an aquatics program.

6.A genuine love for teaching.

7.Ability to relate to staff and members.

8.Must work well with varying age groups of children.

9.Previous experience with leading a swim lesson program a plus.

10.Must be able to work outdoors in extreme heat conditions for long periods of time.

11.Must be able to work in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

12.Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to bend, twist, swat, and/or work in other awkward work positions.

13.Climb, balance, stoop, kneel/crouch, and crawl. Vision:

14.Close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
