Medical Assistant:

SUMMARY


A multi-skilled professional dedicated in assisting all aspects of medical practice under the direct supervision and responsibility of the office manager and physician. Understanding the importance of patient care management, administration and clinical procedures are key elements of success. Competence in the field also requires that a medical assistant adhere to ethical and legal standards of a professional practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Interview patients to obtain medical history and medication use and measure their vital signs, which include height, weight, body mass index (BMI), pulse, blood pressure, blood glucose if applicable, and state of depression as measured via the use of the PHQ-9.


2. Data enter all medical history, medication use, and vital signs into patients' electronic health record (EHR).


3. Perform blood draws as directed by the physician or practitioner and during rotational laboratory schedules. Generate requisitions and preparation of all blood and pathological specimens for pick up from the contracted vendor.


4. Maintain the sanitation of the consultation room and medical instrumentations through the use of Agency approved germicidal cleaning agents.


5. Perform ear irrigations, electrocardiograms, conduction of in-house vision and hearing tests, administration of injections prescribed by the physician or practitioner, and preparation of the consultation room for the collection of gynecological and other pathological specimens.


6. Call patients to the consultation room once the physician or practitioner is ready to initiate the medical encounter.


7. Ensure all diagnostic and/or specialist's consultative notes are available and reviewed by the ordering physician or practitioner prior to the scheduled visit


8. Monitor and complete all logs for the use of in-house medications, temperature of the refrigeration unit housing vaccines, and functionality of the eye wash station and automated external defibrillator (AED).


9. Attend all mandatory trainings required by the Agency such as the consistent actualization of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.


10. Administer first aid or basic life support as directed by the attending physician or practitioner.


11. Check all consultation rooms have the necessary inventory of medical supplies.


12. Remind patients of their appointment with the provider at least a day before the scheduled visit.


13. Monitor and label the expiration dates of all in house medications and vaccines. Eliminate all expired medications and/or vaccines in accordance to the Agency's policies and procedures.


14. Flexible to work rotational extended hours and weekend shifts


15. Preparation of instruments required for in house medical procedures.


16. Works closely with front desk to obtain all pertinent information, changes in demographics information for each visit and support client schedules.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:


Formal vocational training in medical assistance. High School diploma or general education degree (GED); 1 to 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a medical assistant preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:


bility to read, write and speak in English and Spanish (or other languages) helpful. Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memorandums. Agility to effectively communicate information both orally and written on one-to-one and small group situations to clients and other employees.
