Title:
Analyst, Wet Chemistry - Microbiology, QC, Record Keeping
Basic Functions:

  • Log-in of incoming samples including: review COC for accuracy and requested information, log project into

Log Book, number samples, store samples in proper refrigerators, assign tests, create sample run sheets, reports and notify appropriate lab personnel of any short holds or special requests. Also, review project files for accuracy and resolution of discrepancies

  • Update project status including: generation of reports, review with managers as to completion date of late work
  • Run samples within specified parameters and specific holding times, and report data prior to sample due dates
  • Maintain analytical equipment for optimum performance
  • Perform daily, weekly, quarterly and annual maintenance procedures
  • Perform all quality control procedures and document in appropriate log books
  • Prepare chemical solutions, micro culture solutions, QC culture, QC calibration, QC standards, and associated supplies
  • Enter data on run sheets and report templates.
  • Analyze and interpret analytical results

Analyze and interpret bacteriological plates and cultures. * Assist other analysts with sample and reagent preparation, analysis, and data reduction when necessary or as time permits

  • Perform other duties, as needed, to maintain day to day operations in the laboratory, may include overtime and/or working some weekends

Responsibilities:

  • Assure accurate transcription of sample identification numbers on all records
  • Assure that all data are accurately transcribed into notebooks, forms or spreadsheets
  • Enter all data entries into data records
  • Check raw data entries with final computer output to assure accuracy of initial data entry
  • Record appropriate and accurate information concerning sample identification, operating conditions, etc.
  • Properly interpret the computer output in terms of properly identified components, positive or negative identifications, and appropriate confirmatory measures
  • Calculate spike recoveries and precision for duplicates
  • Maintain all quality control data for review by QA officer
  • Perform all quality control procedures according to QA manual, SOPs and laboratory accreditation requirements
  • Immediately report any out of control situations to supervisor and/or QA officer
  • Demonstration of initial and continuing capability through performance of proficiency samples, blind performance samples, written examination, and observed performance
  • Perform all laboratory functions in an ethical, responsible and legally defensible manner

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of laboratory practices and methods
  • Working knowledge of quality control requirements and methods
  • Microbiology aseptic techniques
  • Reading and interpreting bacterial culture plates

Computer knowledge using Microsoft Office and related laboratory software, use of general laboratory information management software Problem solving and troubleshooting

  • Organization, prioritization and diplomacy

Education/Training:

Preferred - B.S. degree in chemistry, environmental, biology, microbiology, or physical sciences, (with at least 16 credit hours of coursework that includes a laboratory component) OR must have an A.S. degree in one of the above disciplines with at least one year of experience in performing environmental analysis of representative drinking water, waste and sludge samples for environmental laboratory analysis of representative inorganic / microbiological analytes.

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
