Summary

As a Health Scientist, you will serve as an authority or consultant for health programs and conduct scientific research to develop a national system or systems to monitor public health capacity and performance at local, state and national levels.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, some CDC employees have been authorized to work virtually. However, when CDC is cleared to return back to work, you will be required to report to the location identified in the vacancy announcement for which you applied.

Responsibilities

As a Health Scientist, you will:

* Identify public health issues and their impact to the community at large.
* Conduct statistical studies or ongoing projects that represent an important segment of the center's primary investigative program.
* Lead scientist and program consultants in various aspects of the study or survey design process.
* Oversee the analysis of studies and projects assessing public health issues.
* Make presentations at international and national conferences and meetings.
* Consult with epidemiologist, statisticians and public health professionals concerning on-going and established studies or other projects where extensive methodological or subject matter interpretation is required.
* Provide expert advice and assistance for public health projects or studies.
* Monitor progress of studies n research projects though all phases to assure adherence to research and programmatic objectives.

Qualifications

In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 14, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. The Federal government, as the largest employer in the Nation, can and should show the way towards achieving drug-free workplaces through programs designed to offer drug users a helping hand, and at the same time demonstrating to drug users and potential drug users that drugs will not be tolerated in the Federal workplace. The use of illegal drugs, on or off duty, by Federal employees is inconsistent not only with the law-abiding behavior expected of all citizens, but also with the special trust placed in such employees as servants of the public. Applicants tentatively selected for this position may be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative applicant drug test result. In order to demonstrate commitment to the HHS goal of a drug-free workplace and to set an example for other Federal employees, employees not in a testing designated position may volunteer for unannounced random testing by notifying their Drug-free Federal Workplace Program Point of Contact upon hiring.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences in allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the

U.S. Department of Education () at the time the degree was obtained.

In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications, applicants must also meet the Minimum Qualifications described below.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include performing and publishing in scientific journals a variety of studies of public health capacity and performance, other health services research, or mathematical modeling, economic or statistical analyses focused on public health problems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
