Job description

Responsibilities

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory procedures that will provide data in the diagnosis and treatment of disease for patients of all age categories (infant/neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric). The technician is responsible for making independent decisions, recognizing abnormal results, and pursuing appropriate follow-up action. At any time, a Laboratory Manager, Medical Technologist or Technical Coordinator can be called upon to review or consult on a technician?s work. Uses own initiative to organize work and set priorities, meet deadlines and complete assignments. This laboratory provides services for patients of all ages.

Qualifications

EducationAssociate degree in Medical Technology or related area or completion of other program allowing certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the state of Georgia. Applicant must be eligible to sit for a certification exam and must have passed within 18mths of their first civilian professional laboratory job start date in the state of Georgia. Record of graduation via transcript from an accredited Medical Technology program or a letter from the certifying organization documenting eligibility will serves as proof of eligibility. Licensure/CertificationCertification as a generalist technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent. ExperienceOne year clinical rotation or lab practicum and/or two years clinical experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrates judgement in assessing results, solving problems or taking action. Substantial interpersonal and communication skills required to interact with hospital staff, physicians and patients to perform duties as listed in functions above. Valid driver's license and report of acceptable Motor Vehicle Record for past 5 years required. (This requirement is required for select incumbents in this title to be determined by department upon hire, not all incumbents are required to drive for this position). Requirement to be tracked by department. Physical DemandsAbility to sit for extended periods of time. Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the department and hospital campus. Ability to reach with hands and arms. Sensory ability: sight to see computer screen; auditory to hear speech and understand speech in person and on the phone. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
