We have an exciting Director, Strategic Partnering role within our Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) department. This role is responsibe to identify partnerships to enable access to external opportunities, such as technologies, product candidates and products to complement the internal product pipeline and product portfolio supporting the BIAH Strategy. This Director role will lead an Advisory Team with representation from key stakeholders, including Research, Clinical and pipeline marketing in order to collaborate and priortize external opportunities, acting as a champion of these prioritized opportunities throughout the entire evaluation and negotiation up to signature of the deal.

Duties & Responsibilities\:

  • Drive strategic plans for partnerships\:
    • Develop and implement strategic plans for partnerships and access to external opportunities in a specified disease area in cooperation with respective disease area experts.
    • Build trust with external partners.
    • Identify external technologies, product candidates and products in alignment with the BIAH strategy.
    • Prioritize activities and targets according to business needs.
  • Scouting and selection of external targets\:
    • Proactively approach external partners directly or through partnering meetings or alternative approaches.
    • Represent BD&L at internal leadership meetings and external partnering meetings.
    • Scout for external targets that meet the BIAH strategy and project priorities of AH Innovation Division, AH Business Partners and Corporte business strategy and other strategic initiatives.
    • Develop strategic analyses together with Global Business Intelligence\: based on market trends analysis and competitive analysis, propose external growth plans for core business and adjacent business; anticipate industry and competitor moves, with a particular focus on AH Business Partners' area of the Business
    • Contribute to the BD plans for the AH Business Partners. The incumbent will help building and will continuously update its external target lists (Business Development plan).
  • Project Leadership\:
    • Lead evaluation of external technologies, product candidates and products with a team of respective experts from other relevant Functions.
    • Assess and challenge the reviews of the evaluation team members and lead the team to a decision.
    • Communicate internally on the project progress and issues, including to governance bodies such as BD Committee (BDC) and the Portfolio Steering Committee (PSC).
    • Prioritize external opportunities by leading a specific Advisory Team.
    • Act as champion of prioritized opportunities throughout the whole evaluation and negotiation up to deal signature.
  • Investment Approval Process\:
    • Initiate and develop commercial concepts for contractual arrangements and align with relevant functions.
    • Decide on terms & conditions for the anticipated partnerships.
    • Strong collaboration with the Transaction team.
  • Negotiation\:
    • Negotiate commercial concepts and terms & conditions with the external partner.
    • Independently driving negotiations, making reasoned decisions and bringing contracts to execution. Initiate and develop term sheets for the anticipated partnerships, with a long-term perspective.
  • Documentation\:
    • Ensure comprehensive documentation.
    • Prepare decision documents with clear and robust, comprehensible recommendations for respective management committees.
    • Influence, inform and align internal and external stakeholders.
    • Document evaluations, reports, recommendations, decision documents and external correspondence in respective mandatory company databases.
  • Project Handover\:
    • Ensure effective handover to appropriate Business Partner and Alliance Management as required.
    • For all completed projects (that led to a signed contract or not), drive the lessons learned together with the Transactions team, i.e. formalize in a 'post-mortem' document what worked well and what can be improved
  • Be responsible for allocated budget.
  • Exhibit strong BD&L team representation when interfacing with business partners on various ad-hoc initiatives. Professionally represent Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health as a partner of choice when attending key partnering meetings and engaging in discussions with potential collaborators.
Requirements\:
  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution required with strong preference of emphasis in life science
  • Greater than ten (>10) years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Greater than five (>5) years in scientific project management or business development or alliance management
  • Greater than one (>1) year of leadership experience
  • Special knowledge in life therapeutic fields, preferably in Animal Health
  • Leadership capabilities
  • Excellent negotiation skills with a focus on win-win outcomes and long-term relationships; Negotiation skills with internal and external partners; perseverance in negotiations
  • Fluency in English (spoken & written)
