Summary:

Under technical direction, responsible for Underwriting assigned commercial book of business. Works within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination. Utilizes underwriting tools and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The applicant will be taking over a book of business and handling current and new accounts independently from quoting to issuance.

Core duties and responsibilities include the following other duties may be assigned as necessary

Work on accounts with varying complexity to rate and issue local US policies for Foreign based companies, independently evaluate the exposure and calculate the premium.

Provide effective and efficient account review and guidance to home office/producing offices.

Import technical and systems expertise and guidance in capturing new and renewal account information.

Build and maintain strong relationship with with local brokers, clients, home office and producing offices as required. This includes data and risk information collection, and the systematic processing of new and renewal business.

Attention to detail; timely and accurate issuance of contractual documentation.

Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills. Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards. Determines appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.

Prepares quotes and answers questions from agents, policyholders, home office/producing office or other external contacts and escalates issues to management along with proposed solutions as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.

Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations.

Keeps current on state issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and freely shares information with others.

Maintains advanced functionality with regards to relevant systems to perform day to day activities

Works with senior underwriters and management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 3 to 5 years of experience in Casualty Underwriting and knowledge of GL, Umbrella, Excess wording and underwriting tools like ISO and IRMI, to take over and independently handle an established book of business.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors degree (B.A.) from four year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
