Overview:
CHICAGO MAGAZINE DEPUTY EDITOR

Chicago Magazine is hiring a Deputy Editor. The Deputy Editor is responsible for assigning and editing long-form narratives, profiles, and service packages - smartly reported and written stories that reflect this city and put Chicago magazine at the center of the conversation. The Deputy Editor will serve as a second set of eyes on other stories, help recruit freelance writers and editors, edit occasional department pieces, and help manage editorial operations.

About Chicago magazine

Chicago magazine has been a part of the fabric of the city since 1970, chronicling the people, places, and events that shape our area. The award-winning magazine, part of Chicago Tribune Media Group, is known for its insightful reporting, riveting long-form narratives, and creative, useful service packages.

Responsibilities:
Assign and edit features to help fill the monthly features well.

Assign and edit stories for the Chicago Stories section.

Pitch story ideas, and writers for them, constantly.

Ensure all parts of the city and the individuals who make up our city are represented in our pages.

Strive to hire top writers, including diverse talent, to tell these stories.

Develop fresh ideas to liven up annual service features (Best of Chicago, Top Doctors, etc.) and come up with clever concepts for new ones.

Help identify and recruit freelance editors to handle stories as needed.

Help top-edit other editors' pieces, providing notes and line edits.

Help brighten up display-copy language throughout the magazine.

Work with the online and social media editors as needed to find fresh ways to tell stories to our digital audience.

Schedule freelance copy editors during monthly production cycle.

Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Editor in Chief

Qualifications:
5+ years of experience editing features. In particular: coaching writers through all stages of the reporting and writing process, including securing access to interview subjects and working with a writer through multiple drafts.

A deep knowledge of the Chicago area and an unsatiable curiosity to learn more about it. (Local candidates have an edge, but people from outside the area who are willing to relocate will be considered.)

A nose for stories and a knack for coming up with inventive, fresh ways to tell them. Candidates should see potential stories everywhere they go­­ - and have the savvy to refine those ideas for the magazine.

A deep list of writer contacts and a commitment to refreshing that list constantly, including recruiting writers from diverse backgrounds.
