Job description

Background
Aon Impact forecasting's (IF) vulnerability team is looking for a vulnerability modeler to build new damage functions for atmospheric perils like wind/ severe convective storm (SCS) and enhance existing ones as part of catastrophe modelling analysis in insurance and reinsurance industry.

Main responsibilities

  • Develop damage functions for atmospheric perils like wind/SCS (using simulation and/or claims) for different regions.
  • Development and calibration of custom damage functions for different clients.
  • Evaluate building codes, building industry data, and construction practices by regions.
  • Collect and analyse insurance claims and loss data.
  • Use IF proprietary loss modelling platform ELEMENTS in estimating loss.
  • Utilize probabilistic models to estimate location and portfolio level loss distribution and average annual loss.
  • Actively collaborate with IF R&D and software development teams in all aspects of the model development and implementing the methodologies developed by the R&D group at IF.
  • Provide critical analysis of modelling results for internal of models and explaining results to clients when required.
  • Collaborate with Aon catastrophe management and analytics team members especially incl. the model evaluation team.
Educational background and skills
  • MSc or PhD in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Wind Engineering required.
  • 2 plus years of experience in CAT Modeling perferred
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Solid knowledge of probability concepts and statistics
  • Proficiency in data analysis and excellent programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or R.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural responses to flood, wind and other perils, especially common failure points and mechanisms
  • General understanding of building practices and codes in the US and Europe
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • Experience working with insurance claims data and building custom vulnerability models
  • Experience with manipulation of large complex datasets using SQL and ability to manipulate large data sets.
  • Knowledge of insurance/reinsurance concepts is a plus
