Position Description:
Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, Inc., one of the largest metals distributors in the US, is currently seeking a Sr. Business Analyst to join our Analytics team in Lisle, IL. The successful candidate will play a vital role in driving the financial performance of Ryerson by contributing to the development of analytic tools used to optimize our business and supply chain operations. The Analytics team is part of the office of the Chief Data Officer and supports key decision makers throughout all functional areas and management levels of Ryerson. Our toolset includes best in breed software such as Microsoft PowerBI, Azure Synapse, IBM Cognos, Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce.com as well as the ability to leverage in-house programming resources for custom application development.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Understand the content, structure and business meaning of data from various systems such as the Data Warehouse, ERP Platforms, web site or external sources. Develop and drive roadmap for ongoing expansion of same.
• Lead the collaboration on design and development of analytic tools with business experts, programmers, developers and other analysts. These tools include reports, dashboards, models and ad-hoc queries used by decision makers to gain required insight into complex business circumstances utilizing software such as PowerBI, Cognos, Azure DevOps, Synapse, Data Factory, Power Automate, Alteryx, Salesforce.com, SAP and Excel.
• Lead and facilitate PowerBI development with strong working knowledge of DAX equations and Power Query M formula language to create Dashboards, extract, analyze and synthesize data in order to provide timely, accurate business insights and create working prototype solutions to test and validate business case assumptions prior to formal tool build outs.
• Experience and strong understanding of Data Modeling techniques to uncover insights & information.
• Gather and document business requirements for datasets, reports, models and groups of same which make up business process supporting "systems". Assist technical team in creation of functional specification and / or solution design.
• Develop subject matter expertise on data from an ever-expanding variety of business disciplines ranging from the local service center operations to corporate departments such as Sales, Marketing, eCommerce, Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, Finance, Accounting, and Treasury.
• Create business user training materials, lead live training classes and produce recorded training sessions.
• Aid in the data collection, testing and validation for newly created and existing data sources.
• Provide tactical analytical support to meet business demands as required.
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in a quantitative major such as Business Analytics, Computer Science, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance or similar business area.
• 5+ years of hands on practical experience taking business intelligence projects from concept to design to fully developed and validated solution or 3+ years of direct Azure and PowerBI experience.
• Strong quantitative and logical thinking skills combined with the ability to think creatively in order to envision relationships between data, and communicate those findings to key decision makers.
• Strong working knowledge in using SQL, Python and Excel. R is a strong plus.
• Deep understanding of integration of technologies and architecture. Create and operate integration practices to ingest, transform and provision data
• Experience in the Microsoft Azure environment using tools such as Data Factory, Data Lakes, Databricks and Synapse
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and understand new software products and concepts, including ability to self-instruct using available texts and other resources.
• Excellent organizational skills with emphasis on ability to organize tasks, manage multiple projects, create and maintain documentation, prioritize work and meet deadlines with minimal direct supervision.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact across multiple departments and levels within a medium to large size enterprise.
