Job description
Job Role Summary:
Apply multi-disciplinary skills in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering and computer science to design, build, and program a collection of laboratory equipment in custom enclosures to enable a complete custom automated platform for smart chemical process development as part of larger automation strategy.
• Integrate laboratory process equipment, process analytical technologies, testing instruments, and sensors in a customized setup using an appropriate combination of various types of advanced programming.
• Develop small-large scale applications from front end design (GUI) to backend data management alone or as part of a group.
• Develop instrument drivers for pumps, chillers, stirrer motors, valves, thermocouples, Process Analytical Technologies (PAT), and related laboratory process and testing equipment.
• Develop relevant and necessary engineering documentation, including: process and instrumentation diagrams, instrument wire maps, user manuals, operations sheets, work instructions, and design reports.
• Manage workload among changing priorities, alternating between hands-on instrument automation, software development, and automated equipment testing.
• Interact with all internal groups, vendors, and third-party custom automation companies.
• Learn and continue to broaden your skill set of the technologies to deliver exciting, effective, and innovative solutions.
• Design and implement automated systems to streamline processes, optimize the efficiency and scale the operation. Continuously improve the preexisting systems and troubleshoot any problems.
• Ensure that automation projects meet safety and quality standards according to regulations and company standards.
• Stay up to date with the latest automation technologies and apply them as required.
• Training of in-house scientists on the use of automation equipment.
Requirements Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Science , Engineering, or equivalent preferred.
5 years or more of hands on experience,
Previous experience with conducting experiments in a laboratory setting.
Presentation skills and ability to act as SME in meetings.

Required Skills:
- Knowledge of serial communications to connect equipment to the computer and automate specified set of equipment with a unified program.
- Knowledge of enabling analog input-outputs and programming the same from relevant programming environment
- Hands-on experience with automation and use of lab equipment such as pumps, balances, flow. UV/pH/conductivity monitors is a plus.
- Ability to gather relevant instrument data and acting upon it to aid in critical decisions.
- Working knowledge of C#, Python and other programming languages, process instrumentation and controls.
- Demonstrated experience in automation
- Demonstrated ability in programming and debugging new and existing applications written in languages such as c#, Python, or similar language.
- Demonstrated written/verbal communication, project management, and collaborative skills are required for this position.
- Use of laboratory equipment and tools to create automated tests and experiments
- Experience in working with appropriate CAD design software like Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc.

- Create and maintain hardware documentation for all automation equipment
- Determine root cause of failures and problems with automation equipment
- Insure proper inventory of automation parts and all associated equipment
- Maintain existing automation equipment and end-of-arm tooling Support production through improvement of automation equipment, operations and troubleshooting
- Perform a variety of diagnostic troubleshooting activities on assembly automation equipment
- Read & modify electrical schematics as needed for automation equipment
- Create and/or modify existing end of tooling and automation equipment
- Assemble, debug and test various types of industrial automation equipment
- Perform and evaluate automation efficiency studies for optimization
- Solve automation problems & increase self-knowledge
