Research & Development Chemist

The primary result expected from the R&D Chemist will be to formulate new products as requested by Marketing, re-formulate current product lines for improvement, and solve technical scale-up and manufacturing problems by ensuring the availability of quality and value engineered products which satisfy customer's requirements and increase sales and profitability of the corporation.

Tasks PROFILE:

Typical tasks for this position include (but are not limited to) the following:

• Analyze organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, relationships, and reactions, utilizing chromatography, spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry techniques.
• Maintain laboratory instruments to ensure proper working order and troubleshoot malfunctions when needed.
• Develop, improve, and customize products, equipment, formulas, processes, and analytical methods.
• Conduct quality control tests.
• Direct, coordinate, and advise personnel in test procedures for analyzing components and physical properties of coatings and related materials.
• Prepare test solutions, compounds, and reagents for laboratory personnel to conduct test.
• Compile and analyze test information to determine process or equipment operating efficiency and to diagnose malfunctions.
• Confer with peers and supervisors to conduct analyses of research projects, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests.
• Write technical papers and reports and prepare standards and specifications for processes, products, or tests.
• Induce changes in composition of substances by introducing heat, light, energy, and chemical catalysts for quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Responsibilities/Expectations:

• Communicate with Supervisors, peers, or subordinates: provide information to supervisors and co-workers in written form or in person.
• Maintain a good record of attendance and punctuality.
• Learn all manual tasks performed within the department.
• Perform tasks assigned using specific operating procedures, and following department specific quality control processes and procedures.
• Adhere to Quality principles and participate in all departmental and company-wide Quality activities.
• Follow all safety procedures and company policies.

Qualifications:

• Degree in Chemistry of Coatings / Polymer Science, with four to six years of coatings technology experience, or experience at the Chemist I level with four to six years of coatings technology, or College level degree in laboratory sciences with a chemistry minor and a focus on organic and inorganic chemistry and one year of college level math, along with five to seven years of coatings technology.
• Chemistry - Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
• Production and Processing - Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
• Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
