SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Board of Directors, the Development Coordinator is responsible for the fundraising initiatives of the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County including but not limited to writing grants, organizing fundraising events, and building relationships with stakeholders. The Development Coordinator will also work with the Board of Directors to help manage the shelter's finances. The Development Coordinator directly supports the mission, goals, objectives, strategic plans and development of the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County and serves as agency spokesperson in the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and implements, in collaboration with the board of trustees, a Strategic Fundraising Plan designed to accelerate the accomplishment of the CommunityHumane Shelter of Steuben County mission and position the organization for long- term success and viability. The plan should include: Organizing major giving programs/events (Casino Night, annual appeal, more)
- Researching and applying for grants
- Fostering and growing relationships with current donors and finding new donors
- Creating a plan for the endowment
- Tracking and assessing fundraising metrics
- Administers fiscal management program including the preparation of the operating budgets. Oversees the authorized and proper expenditure of funds and ensures that all funds, physical assets and other property of the agency are appropriately safeguarded and administered. Oversees all agency accounts.
- Facilitates a volunteer program that encompasses fostering, support of daily shelter activities, and support of special events
- Manages the shelter's social media presence and marketing plan
- Represents the shelter as the chief spokesperson. Seeks out and maintains community contacts with government officials, agencies, civic groups, organizations, and the media. Attends pertinent workshops and seminars, maintains membership in professional organizations.
- Attends monthly board of directors meetings to present reports and apprise them of important issues, successes and new ideas. Assists the various board committees with their specific assignments. Serves as one of three liaisons between the board and staff.
- Collaborates with the shelter management team, staff, and board of directors on a regular basis to review reports, procedures, and problems and develop plans, goals, and strategies.
- Stays abreast of current animal welfare issues as well as the changing needs of the community. Responds to community concerns regarding animal and agency issues.
- Models the shelter philosophy and mission in their work throughout the organization.
- Serve as liaison in Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County legal affairs.Supervise and direct Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County vendors, contractors and consultants to assure performance under their agreements with Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County in compliance with Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County budget and other restraints imposed by the Board of Directors. Ensure that satisfactory relationships exist between Insurance Agents, Consultants, Accountants, Vendors and other (possible) contractors.
- Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
Supervises volunteers for the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County based on the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to interviewing and training volunteers, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding volunteers; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Must have demonstrated experience in fundraising for a nonprofit organization, including annual funds, volunteer drives, planned giving and budget management.
- Must have a working knowledge of animal shelters, animal rights or wildlife rehabilitation centers.
- Must have experience working with and coordinating multiple tasks using staff and volunteer resources, especially training and accommodating Board and Board
Committee members in their organizational functions.
- Must be able to use a variety of resources including social media, spreadsheets,
Greater Giving, etc.
- Must be able to meet and deal with the public in a tactful and diplomatic manner, communicate effectively with other individuals, and be able to objectively evaluate challenges and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Important considerations for this position include a sincere interest in and knowledge of the philosophy of animal rights issues and of animal health care; a demonstrated knowledge of organizational and financial procedures for nonprofit agencies; a creative and dynamic approach to fundraising opportunities; demonstrated skills in human resource management and strong leadership abilities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
College degree or equivalent education and experience combination. Master's degree preferred but not required.
Grant writing experience is preferred. Experience with a nonprofit organization is helpful.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topic to public groups and/or boards of directors. Computer skills are required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts for budgetary purposes.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
