Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities:
- This position is responsible for the design and/or fabrication of advanced scientific research equipment through the use of CAD software, CNC mills, lathes and various machine shop equipment with an emphasis on mechanical structure and fabrication aspects.
- The person in this position will do mechanical analysis of structural, vacuum, and pressure systems.
- Consults with faculty, students, and staff providing mechanical design and engineering guidance in the construction of projects (choosing materials, improving designs, fabrication cost/time estimating), and repairs/improvements of existing equipment.
- Prepares basic and complex design documents, mechanical drawings, plans, and specifications for mechanical systems.
- Prepares project cost estimates and makes decisions based on the proper application of relevant design standards.
- Assigns and manages projects through completion, providing technical advice and guidance to colleagues and staff.
- Analyzes, reviews, and troubleshoots issues. Implements solutions to mitigate issues and improve operation and efficiency of mechanical systems. Performs field surveys and project inspections.
- Attends required training programs and ensures mechanical systems compliance with safety and OSHA protocols.
- May provide guidance to Graduate students on project designs.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology.
Required
- 2 years of experience in a relevant field.
- 1 year of experience Engineering in design, fabrication, construction, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of scientific instruments.
- Machining experience a plus.
Required
- Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
Required
- Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Knowledge of all applicable safety standards.
- Operates computer and fully literate in Microsoft products (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), familiarity with CAD products.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and engineering software.
- Knowledge of fabrication techniques, CNC milling, CNC lathes, manual lathe, manual milling machine, welding skills, sheet metal, woodworking, rigging, and engineering of scientific research instrumentation.
- Knowledge and application of all standards governing mechanical, electrical and CAD.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
