The Control System Safety Engineer will develop and maintain the Safety Case for Electronic Engine Control and Monitoring systems.

The safety case ensures that the control system is designed to meet, as low as reasonably practical, the engine functional hazard rates, and applicable certification requirements. This includes developing safety based requirements and demonstrating that the engine control system is essentially single fault tolerant and has no probable combination of electrical or electronic failures resulting in a Loss of Power Control (LOPC).

You may be involved at any stage of a project lifecycle from concept development, design, integrated/component testing through final production release and in-service support. You'll usually work in project teams with colleagues in other branches of engineering, and interface with the whole engine Lifecycle Engineering Group. Other interfaces will include controls suppliers, the airframe manufacturer and civil and military airworthiness authorities.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Familiarity with the design and development of safety critical mechanical, electrical or embedded software systems
  • Familiarity with requirements management and validation
  • Experience of one or more of the following
  • System Safety and Reliability Assessment comprisingFunctional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) or Common Cause Analysis (CCA)
  • Review of open problems or field service issues for operational or safety impact

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of airborne engine control systems, hardware and software for turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft engines
  • Familiarity with the following standard
  • ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-1629, DO-178B, DO-254
  • Experience using one or more of the following tools: Fault Tree+, Reliability Workbench, DOORS
  • Experience working in agile development teams
  • Ability to present technical data and conclusions/recommendations to senior engineers and management
  • Current (or ability to obtain/maintain) US DOD Secret or Top Secret security Clearance

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of experienceor Master's degree with 4+ years of experience in systems, software or component engineering (development or testing)
