Job Description:

Position Purpose: • The laboratory technician is a person who is responsible for maintaining high standards of laboratory testing. The technician will have knowledge of blood collection, testing protocols, and safe specimen handling while understanding the needs of the patients to ensure proper patient care. Scheduling Pattern: • Hours vary. There is a weekend, holiday and on-call involvement. Education/Licensure/Training/Experience: • Must have an associated degree in lab science and graduated from CLS program after 1995 in order to perform high complexity tests. This is within the hospital laboratory and open to MLT, MT/MLS or a BS in lab science. Previous experience preferred, but not required. Registration with an approved agency must be completed within 6 months after hiring. • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and documentation of training in order to do moderate complexity or waived tests. This is within the clinic laboratories and is open to MLS, MT, Rad Techs, POCT, MD, Nurses, and EMT. Waived testing positions are open to MAs and phlebotomists as well. Previous experience preferred, but not required. Special Skills & Abilities: • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires the ability to distinguish letters and symbols. Requires the use of office equipment, such as computer, telephone or copier. Requires corrected normal vision range and the absence of color-blindness, corrected hearing to be able to communicate with customers in person or via electronic means, and to hear instrumentation signals. Requires standing or sitting for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts items weighing 50 pounds or greater from floor to a height of 4 feet. Requires working under stressful conditions, working irregular hours, working independently or alone occasionally. Requires exposure to communicable disease or bodily fluid and tissues. Working Conditions: • Frequent exposure to communicable disease and toxic substances and other conditions common to a hospital/clinic environment. Occasional temperature variations and moderate noise levels. Access to Patient Information: • In order to comply with HIPAA, all employees must abide by organization and department policies regarding security and privacy. All staff members must work together to ensure patient confidentiality. This position will be working in a patient care area and will have access to oral, written, and electronic data containing patient information. This information is needed in order to carry out the duties assigned to this position. All staff will display name badges when seeking data. Staff will have electronic access via their own individual password and will log off as appropriate when inquiry is complete. Patient records and charts will be kept in a confidential manner in a controlled area to assure privacy and security of such information. Participates in events in the community in which you work or live. 65% Essential Functions: • Finance - Maintains a margin to support and achieve Palmer Lutheran's Mission 1. Ensures that orders get to the proper location for coding and diagnosis are associated with order. 2. Utilizes controls, calibrators, and reagents to the maximum capacity minimizing waste for all instruments. 3. Keeps track of inventory to avoid additional shipping charges for overnight shipping. • Quality/Service - Promotes quality outcomes while emphasizing positive patient experience 0. Prioritize and efficiently handles orders. 1. Identify patients before drawing samples by wristband, DOB, and/or name. 2. Ensures the integrity of samples and results. 3. In regards to sample requirement, techs will have the knowledge or access to information. 4. Is proficient at venipuncture, capillary and arterial collections. 5. Participate in proficiency testing in all areas and does follow up as needed. 6. Responsible for reviewing and reporting QC to proper agencies. 7. Maintains proper documentation of performed maintenance, QC, and calibrations. 8. Monitors test results and does corrective action as necessary. 9. Remains proficient in all lab testing by daily rotation. 10. Demonstrates competency in the lab (uses the lab competency annual review, skill sets, and education quizzes from the learning zone) • Growth/Service Line -Ensures Palmer Lutheran's growth through services, technology; professional and personal growth. 0. Reviews policy/procedure books as required. Signs items for review in the Lab Communication Book. 1. Stays updated on new software version, test list, computer programs. 2.
