Laboratory Technician (Nutrition & Biosciences)

~9-Month Contract (full-time, W2)

Pay Rate: $17.40/hour

  • Position: Application Technician - Food Protection - Antioxidants
  • Department: Innovation - Food Protection

Nature of Work/Scope of Position:

This position will be located at the Company Nutrition & Bioscience facility in New Century, KS and will be supporting the Food Protection business. The contractor will be responsible for carrying out antioxidant and analytical testing in Company's state of the art analytical lab. This includes testing the oxidative stability of food products as well as setting up, running, and maintaining analytical equipment (i.e. HPLC, IC, GCMS, OSI, Rancimat, etc.), and preparing all standards and product materials under general supervision. On occasion, this individual will be responsible for running basic microbiological testing in our food microbiology lab.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work closely with scientists and project leaders to lay out well thought out a SOW (Scope of Work) to ensure the best possible chance of success with all projects.
  • Coordinate with supervisor and/or Scientists to carry out projects and prepare accurate/detailed reports.
  • Manage all routine analytical testing. This includes receiving and logging-in product samples, running subsequent analytical tests, and recording/reporting data.
  • Set up and run analytical and oxidative stability test methods on HPCL, GCMS, Oxipres, OSI, Rancimat, etc.
  • Provide basic microbiology support when needed (i.e. Gram staining, media preparation, plating, etc.).
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment as required.
  • Keep laboratory notebook accurate and up to date.
  • Ensure adherence to all management systems including, ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and Food Safety, with an understanding of Company Nutrition & Biosciences quality and environmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • To successfully perform the requirements of this position, the incumbent must have a degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field and have some experience working in an analytical lab.
  • Experience working in a microbiology lab and/or an understanding of basic microbiology is a plus, but not required.
  • An interest in food science and/or and understanding is also a plus, but not required.
  • This individual will need to be able to adapt to an ever-evolving project environment and be able to prioritize their work accordingly.
  • We are looking for someone who can learn quickly and can be trusted to carry out all job duties with minimal oversight.
  • This is a highly collaborative environment, so this individual will need to have excellent communication skills and enjoy working both independently as well as in a group setting.

Working Conditions:

  • This position operates in a laboratory/pilot plant environment.
  • This position may require heavy lifting up to 40 lbs. and working with hazardous materials.

Additional Notes:

This position is responsible for running general food microbiological testing in a BSL1 lab. Experience with the following is highly desired:

  • Microbiological media (agar/broth) production.
  • Familiarity/experience with various microbiological plating techniques (e.g. spread & pour plates, Petri-film, agar overlays, etc.).
  • Adept in organism isolations and Gram staining.
  • Organism characterization (e.g. morphology, bio-chemical identification, genetic identification, etc.).
  • Running shelf-life and challenge studies on a wide range of food products.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as needed.
  • Capable of following detailed/complex work instructions.
  • Well versed in calculating dilutions.
  • Experience with microscopy.
  • Ability to prioritize work as needed.

The ideal candidate would have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in microbiology or food microbiology and a minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience working in a microbiology lab. College lab experience may be substituted for work experience if the candidate was a TA for micro/food micro labs in college. This position will report into the Food Protection Group Manager, North America and will interact heavily with our scientists and technologists.
