Job description
General Purpose:
Responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all elements of the volunteer program including the training and supervision of volunteers.
Essential Functions:
- Recruits and selects volunteers sufficient to meet the needs of the hospice program.
- Develops and provides the volunteer training and orientation program.
- Works with the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) to identify the need for volunteer services to support hospice program functions and patients/families.
- Provides supervision and evaluation of volunteers.
- Maintains volunteer service statistics at the frequency designated in hospice policy.
- Maintains current volunteer files.
- Re-evaluates the volunteer program on a regular basis.
- Ensures volunteer support and education are sufficient to support volunteer retention.
- Regularly attends IDG meetings and participates in the development of the IDG plan of care.
- Provides information to individuals and community groups about hospice volunteer services.
- Participates as needed in the budget preparation for program development.
- Participates in the quality assessment and performance improvement (QAPI) program.
- Provides volunteer services as needed.
- Completes other assignments as requested and assigned.
- May have access to personal health information ("PHI") necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities. Access to use and ability to disclose PHI is further defined by each organization/department.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
- Associate's Degree or equivalent years of experience and training that includes management and oversight of multiple individuals; development and execution of recruitment, selection and training of individuals providing a variety of services; preparation and management of a budget and related expenditure; and maintenance of statistics related to hours served.
- Preferred: Advanced Degree in Human Services or Health Care Administration.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in a health care setting. Hospice and/or volunteer experience preferred.
- Able to provide proof of valid driver's license, if applicable.
- Able to provide proof of valid auto liability insurance if assignment includes driving own vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Able to supervise, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer services.
- Able to organize and develop volunteers for both patient and organizational needs.
- Able to manage a group of individuals providing volunteer services.
- Knowledge and commitment to the hospice philosophy of care.
- Demonstrates good verbal and written communication, and organization skills.
- Able to work as a member of an interdisciplinary group.
- Able to effectively communicate with clinical and non-clinical employees, patients and family/caregivers.
- Able to perform and prioritize multiple functions or tasks.
- Able to effectively deal with multiple changes.
- Meets applicable federal and state health requirements.
- Meets the requirements of federal and state criminal and abuse background checks where applicable.
Working Conditions & Physical Effort:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment or a home.
- Occasional exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens and/or potentially infectious or hazardous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment (e.g. face masks, goggles, latex and/or non-latex gloves).
- Able to occasionally travel locally from assignment to assignment.
- Able to constantly stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, kneel and reach freely.
- Able to constantly grasp with thumb in opposition to fingers of palm, i.e. manipulate pen, knobs or objects.
- Visual acuity, dexterity and hearing to perform required skills.
- Able to work flexible schedule and/or evening hours as needed.
- Light physical activity that may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 20 lbs in order to carry out daily job functions and related activities that may be required.
