The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Scope of Position:

  • Process development engineer that applies fundamental understanding of materials chemistry and engineering principles to develop melting process capability for new glass compositions.
  • Projects will vary but will involve objectives ranging from new product innovations for Specialty Materials businesses, continuous improvement of Melting Attributes, and technology development and implementation to meet business objectives.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Melting and delivery system including process setup development and engineering. Lead all activity related to achieving melting process objectives.
  • Reporting/communications during tank trials: status, issues, troubleshooting plans.
  • Design and implementation of process experimentation.
  • Support migration of new glass compositions to manufacturing locations worldwide.
  • Worldwide manufacturing support. Provide third level trouble-shooting for operational issues.
  • Technical analysis of melting and delivery processes. Application of analytical results to improving processes and meeting customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with Research and Development for production trials of new products, processes, and technology.
  • Work with Plant Engineering to facilitate the introduction of new processes, products, and technology into manufacturing.
  • Worldwide migration of new Processes, Products, and Technologies within the division.
  • Develop new technology to improve melting operations. New technology includes operational practices, raw materials, and process design.

Travel Requirements:

  • We anticipate up to 25 - 40% travel, primarily international to Asia but some domestic travel is also required. Typical travel duration may be 2-5 weeks depending on project.

Working Hours:

  • Office hours are typically 8AM-5PM, Monday - Friday - Evening conference calls with teams in Asia are sometimes required. Frequency of these meetings depends on project assignment.
  • Weekend work and/or travel is sometimes required.

Education & Experience:

  • We require a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Engineering or Science related
  • New graduate or work experience in process engineering or a manufacturing environment
  • Technically curious - seeks information needed to succeed in becoming a glass melting SME
  • Strong technical skills - understanding of materials science/chemistry to apply to defect formation mechanisms, understanding of heat and mass transfer, understanding of materials thermodynamics and kinetics.
  • Analytical - ability to use meticulous data analysis and distill into concise results.
  • Problem-solving - ability to handle technical challenges using scientific methodology.
  • MS Office computing skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of glass chemistry and properties.
  • Glassmaking, ceramic or other materials processing experience.
  • Continuous manufacturing process experience.
  • New product/process development or scale up experience.
  • Statistical analysis skills and/or experimental design experience.
  • Project leadership skills - vision, planning, and execution.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills - ability to interact across all parts of the organization (operators, trades, engineers, scientists, managers).
