Job Description

Students will join Dr. Edmonds as collaborators on a USDA funded project to explore the influence of using treated wastewater to grow plants in an aeroponic system. This student will be a valuable team member, learning extensive laboratory, data collection, and data analysis skills, as well as learning the construction and maintenance of aeroponic systems for plant growth. The student is expected to work as a part of the research team in a respectful and mature manner. The research team includes faculty and staff from DRI and UNLV, and the work will be completed at all three campuses, as well as at the site location for the aeroponic systems, the Clark County Water Reclamation District wastewater treatment plant. The student will learn how to do research, providing them with invaluable experience that can lead to their acceptance into graduate school, as well as the possibility of being an author on a published paper in a peer-reviewed journal.

Core Responsibilities:

• Laboratory DNA extraction, DNA quantification, amplification of genes using quantitate PCR, water filtration, water chemistry analysis of nutrients, instrument calibration, instrument maintenance
• Field data collection of root mass and root tissues
• Data analysis skills in Excel
• Construction and maintenance of aeroponic systems for plant growth
• Travel to treatment facility and maintain access card

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher
• Must be an enrolled degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current or upcoming semester at NSC
• Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas)

Work Hours:

Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

Hourly Rate:

$12.00 per hour.
