Buyer - Louisville, KY

Carbide Industries , the leading manufacturer of Calcium Carbide, is seeking a full time Buyer for our Louisville, KY facility. This is an exempt position, reporting to the Purchasing Manager.

Calcium Carbide is widely used as a desulfurization reagent for treating liquid metal in iron foundries and steel plants. It is also the primary source of Acetylene Gas for metal fabrication and construction and is a vital ingredient in the manufacture of many specialty chemicals. Our Louisville facility operates the only submerged Electrical Arc Furnace for the manufacture of Calcium Carbide in the US and Canada.

Position Summary

The Buyer will source and procure raw materials, operating supplies, equipment, and services to align with inventory controls, cost savings objectives and other project objectives, as identified by and in cooperation with the Purchasing Manager .

This position is not available for remote work.

Job Requirements:
Job Duties and Responsibilities



Purchasing Responsibilities

  • Sourcing raw materials as directed by the Purchasing Manager
  • Actively manage incoming raw material shipments
  • Forecasts raw materials for future production requirements due to lead times.
  • Works closely with management personnel to maintain inventory levels.
  • Assists in contract negotiations and maintains communications with suppliers in order to maximize plant efficiency and cost saving
  • Responsible for sourcing multiple bids for projects requiring outside contract service
  • Responsible for sourcing all mobile equipment needed for plant operations and projects
  • Ensures all open purchase orders are accurate and receipts are input in the proper period
Logistics Responsibilities
  • Oversees daily reporting for product packing and shipping schedules
  • Actively manages daily and weekly customer truck and rail shipments
  • Ensures records related to traffic and shipments are maintained
  • Monitors safety procedures necessary for over the road drivers as it relates to the plant
  • Negotiates railcar leases, and OTR carrier contracts
  • Communicates known and potential shipping delays to sales and customer service
  • Maintains basic knowledge of DOT regulations
Other Responsibilities

  • Willing to learn and maintain basic rail/truck shipping knowledge
  • Work directly with Purchasing Manager/Controller to analyze purchasing trends and cost saving strategies
  • Works within and maintains compliance with ISO 9 standards
  • Work Hours (7am - 3pm) Monday - Friday and (6am - 7am) Saturday (remotely, shares responsibility)
Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, purchasing or finance preferred, in a manufacturing organization. A Bachelor's degree a related business field, proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and strong organizational, analytical, computer, and communications skills are required.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Normally works in a climate-controlled environment with limited exposure to areas of heat, cold, dust and noise. When in-plant activities are required, normal protective equipment consists of hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, and hearing protection.
