Job Summary:

Performs processing, ordering testing when indicated and

accessioning of specimens in the department. Assists with assigned clerical, quality control and quality assurance duties as well as answering phones, relaying patient results and monitoring pending logs. Aide may perform some waived or moderately complex testing. Aides are expected to assist with phlebotomy and Central Processing duties when requested.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a summary of the major functions of this individual's job. He or she may perform other duties, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Determines specimen type and ordering are within stated guidelines for testing.

2. Determines specimen requirements and conditions for handling have been met and prepares specimen for processing. Packages specimens for shipping according to temperature, adhering to the Department of Transportation guidelines.

3. Packages known infectious specimens according to IATA and DOT infectious shipping guidelines.

4. Clarifies orders when needed with nursing unit.

5. Follows up on specimens and orders still pending from the floors ensuring nurse and physician are aware of a need to reschedule or cancel testing.

6. Performs and documents quality control procedures according to specific department's guidelines.

7. Performs and documents preventative maintenance according to specific department's guidelines.

8. Reviews pending list and handles follow up on any unreceived specimens prior to the end of the shift. Relays information about any pending sample that is unresolved to the next shift.

9. Answer phones and faxes reports as well as calls panic values. Documents activity on the patient report according to laboratory policy.

10. Assists with all quality control and quality assurance activities as requested by the supervisor or technical personnel of the department.

11. Performs inventory and stores stock items as they are received from Materials Management or other vendors.

12. Performs clerical duties specific to the department.

13. Assists in Central Processing; answering phones, ordering testing, and receiving specimens, etc.

14. Assists in phlebotomy as requested.

15. Discard biohazardous waste appropriately on a daily basis.

16. Performs all other duties as requested by supervisor.

17. Releases interfaced reference lab results in a timely manner.

18. Processes all manual reports and distributes appropriately.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:

A. High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent (education and/or experience beyond High School).
