Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge

The Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing individual, group and family therapy to HIV-infected individuals and their affected family members. This position also targets HIV infected individuals with substance abuse related issues.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provides counseling to individuals and families to address HIV-related issues.
  • Provides group and individual counseling to HIV-infected individuals and families enrolled in the program, targeting disclosure, death, dying, and grief issues.
  • Refers clients for needed psychiatric services, and follows up with recommendations.
  • Serves as a consultant to program case managers regarding disclosure issues, stability in chaotic family situations, death, dying and grief issues.
  • Participates in team meetings and case conferences to collaborate with other team members.
  • Documents all services in client case record, accurately and promptly.
  • Coordinates all therapy appointments with clients' other appointments for services.
  • Provides community and professional education on mental health issues related to HIV.
  • Assists in the ongoing development and implementation of program evaluation of mental health issues.
  • Provides counseling to clients to address substance issues.
  • Job Management

The Mental Health/Abuse Counselor will be expected to maintain the established case load size and productivity standards as established in the program policy and procedures. They will maintain contact with each active client, maintain records and pertinent data, and be able to organize work responsibilities in an efficient manner.

III. Use of Supervision

The Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counselor employee will be directly accountable to the Program Supervisor and will have regularly scheduled supervisory conferences. They will be able to use supervision constructively, prepare for supervisory consultation or case staffing of problematic cases and be able to engage in self-assessment of attitude, skill development issues, and work related issues.

  • Qualifications

Masters Degree in Social Work. LCSW. Master Degree, LPC, PLCP

A minimum of two years post-Masters' experience in counseling.

Must have past experience with mental health and substance abuse issues. Previous work in a medical setting, with chronically ill, with substance issues preferred. Excellent verbal, written and computer skills, ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and economic status, and excellent working knowledge of HIV.
