Job description
Faculty Position in Computer Science The College of the Atlantic (COA) seeks a Full time faculty
member in Computer Science. The anticipated start date is August,
2022. The successful candidate will be the only faculty member in
computer science at COA. The faculty member will offer a range of
classes to help students gain basic to advanced programming skills,
while introducing students to the central questions of computer
science and exposing them to the styles of thought and habits of
mind associated with computer scientists. The faculty member is expected to help
students make connections between computer science and other areas
of the curriculum, including the arts and humanities as well as the
natural and social sciences.
In addition to introductory and intermediate programming
classes, we are interested in a candidate who can offer engaging
and challenging courses that explore the intersections of computer
science and computing with different aspects of the human
experience and academic and creative areas. Examples of such
classes might include some of the following:
cryptography and computer security, information visualization,
human-computer interaction, machine learning and artificial
intelligence, generative art, digital humanities, data mining,
micro-controller programming.
The faculty member must have a Ph.D.in computer science,
engineering, computational science, applied mathematics, physics,
or a related area, and demonstrated potential for excellent and
innovative teaching. It is essential that the faculty member has a
background in computing and is enthusiastic about and focused on
developing creative ways to teach computer science to students with
a wide range of backgrounds and goals.
College of the Atlantic is an interdisciplinary college of
approximately 350 undergraduate students and 30 faculty members.
Its oceanfront campus is adjacent to Acadia National Park.
COA's faculty are not organized by departments, and all students
design their own major in human ecology. The average class size is
13. Faculty teach five courses a year distributed across three
ten-week terms; faculty also advise students, direct independent
studies and final projects, and contribute to the shared governance
of the college. COA is a highly interdisciplinary college seeking
to understand the relationships between humans and their built,
natural, and social-cultural environments, where theory is tied to
practice, and where friendship and cooperation help define our
community. Through both teaching and scholarship, we aim to foster
the capacity to make improvements within the world and
ourselves.
