Northrop Grumman Mission Systems seeks a Materials and Processes Engineer specializing in selection and characterization of polymeric materials used in electronic assemblies as it relates to encapsulation, protection, strength, thermal characteristics, expansion/shrinkage and electrical properties. This person is expected to be knowledgeable in formulation, processing and properties of thermosetting materials, such as epoxies, urethanes, silicones, and polyimides. Compositions of interest include adhesives, coatings, thermal interface materials, heat transfer fluids, polymers for additive manufacturing, and printed wiring boards. Duties include failure analysis, manufacturing support, selection of materials, and preparation of custom formulations. Typical duties include approximately equal amounts of time in the laboratory and communicating results to customers orally or by written reports. The incumbent is expected to interact directly with customers and work well in small teams. The Materials and Processes group has excellent facilities and equipment for characterization and testing of metals, polymers, and ceramics. In addition, we have broad capabilities for measuring mechanical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties of materials, as well as analytical chemistry instrumentation for determination of composition and purity. Equipment for laboratory-scale custom synthesis is also available. We supply custom ceramic and polymer compositions for internal customers when no commercial material meets performance requirements. Basic Qualifications
Applicants must have a degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with a focus in materials, Polymer Science or Physical Chemistry combined with related hands-on industrial laboratory experience in polymer processing and/or characterization.
