Job description

The primary result expected from the Environmental, Health, & Safety Specialist is to help ensure EHS compliance of facilities, equipment, and personnel by

  • understanding company policies and local, state and federal EHS regulations,
  • reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing the work environment and personnel practices, and
  • designing programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent EHS non-compliances and incidents.
  • Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Investigate EHS incidents to identify causes and determine how to prevent recurrence.
  • Investigate conditions and behaviors that could affect employee health, comfort, DHS security, or EHS performance and take measures to reduce and control risks.
  • Lead Site Safety Team(s) and EHS initiatives
  • Assist EHS Manager in developing and maintaining safety, environmental and industrial hygiene programs including PPE and ergonomic assessments.
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices in order to ensure compliance with safety and security standards and government regulations.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, QC Laboratory, Sourcing, and Engineering to institute EHS controls and remedial measures to reduce risk due to EHS conditions, behaviors, procedures, or equipment.
  • Conduct EHS training and education programs, and demonstrate the use of EHS equipment.
  • Provide contractor and new-employee EHS training and on-going training, and develop materials for the training.
  • Assist EHS Manager in ensuring continued compliance with Environmental policies, regulations, programs and procedures, including Hazardous Waste management, Air emissions calculations, storm water management and Spill prevention and counter containment.
  • Help the site advance overall in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security.
  • Communicate with Management, Supervisors, peers, or other Associates: provide information as needed in written form or in person.
  • Continuously improve EHS compliance, performance, programs and procedures.
  • Perform EHS tasks assigned using knowledge, skills and abilities in addition to specific operating procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Four-year bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) related field preferred.

  • Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national occupational safety (OSHA 1910 and 1926), process safety management, as well as site security for the protection of DHS program interests, people, data, property, facilities and operations.
  • Environmental - Knowledge of relevant environmental policies, regulations (local, state and federal), programs and procedures, including Hazardous Waste management, EPCRA, Air emissions calculations, storm water management and Spill prevention and counter containment.
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of and the practical application of engineering, science, chemistry, and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design, control, and maintenance of production and maintenance activities of the site.

Chemistry - Knowledge of the chemical hazards, including danger signs, and disposal methods
