Job description

The CTE Career and Technical Navigator is a Perkins grant-funded position. This position directly supports students in CTE programs, student success, and enhanced services aligned with Perkins V federal requirements and funding. The CTE Career and Technical Navigator is responsible for supporting students in transitioning to career and technical pathways or post high school to Chesapeake College. The position will assess their goals and help them develop a successful academic and career plan. The position will work closely with faculty and staff at the high schools, and faculty and staff at Chesapeake College, local organizations, and businesses to inform and provide advising to programs and services at Chesapeake. The position will provide close guidance of dual enrolled high school students participating in the college's Career and Technical (CTE) programs and courses. They are responsible for understanding and interpreting all College policies and academic options of all CTE degree and certificate programs to help facilitate student success. This position will carry a focus of furthering support to students from Perkins special populations in identifying career opportunities and preparing them for the workforce. The ideal candidate will possess positive energy, and exceptional communication skills.

This position will report to the Director of Advising. Responsibilities and activities are confirmed on an annual basis and are dependent upon the attainment of Perkins grant performance indicators, continued funding levels, and outcomes of the Perkins comprehensive local needs assessment.



Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, psychology, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.

Two to three years of professional work experience in a setting where required skills have been demonstrated.

Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, presentation, verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated organizational abilities.

Ability to relate to diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies.

Proficiency with emerging technologies and willingness to learn new computer applications and programs.

Bilingual in Spanish/English ideal.

Must be able to travel and work evenings and weekends.

Ability to meet deadlines and performance goals.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.


Serve as a member of the Enrollment and Advising team.

Work with students and potential students to increase awareness of and assess interest in CTE careers and nontraditional career options, navigate enrollment processes, and connect with CTE instructors in a desired program of study.

Collaborate with five-county school system CTE directors and high school program instructors to strengthen pathways from high school CTE programs to Chesapeake College CTE programs.

Encourage and facilitate student attainment of Perkins CTE success indicators, including non-traditional participation; completion and credential attainment, including academic credentials and professional certifications and licensures; and retention/placement.

Collaborate with program faculty, career services staff, other student services staff, and workforce/community stakeholders, including the Local Advisory Council and Program Advisory Committees, to refer CTE students to resources which will support student success and career placement.

Provide specific supports to a caseload of identified high-need students throughout their course of study to ensure student retention and progress toward graduation and career placement.

Assist in achieving goals and measurable objectives in support of grant objectives as well as the College's mission and purposes, strategic goals and vision statement.

Work closely with admissions, advising, CTE college faculty, and financial aid staff to promote new dual enrolled and adult CTE students.
