John Hancock is a top seller of Life Insurance in North America writing an average face amount in excess of $1 Million and targeting the affluent and emerging affluent markets. John Hancock has earned an industry leading reputation for the delivery of Advanced Markets sales strategies, innovative educational tools and expert case consultation to our distributors. This Associate Counsel position is responsible for being a leader in the Advanced Markets group as an attorney with substantial expertise and experience in the areas of wealth transfer planning, business succession planning, charitable planning and related tax issues. An associate counsel will also have demonstrated experience providing advanced market case design support and speaking in front of various-sized audiences comprised of distributors and sales personnel presenting sales concepts and regulatory/legislative changes impacting our industry.

The primary client facing responsibilities of this role will be providing Advanced Markets phone and email inquiry support, and education to our distributors and other internal John Hancock stakeholders. Additionally, this role will be required to identify new and underserved markets and support the development of sales and marketing tools to promote and educate on these initiatives, draft and edit Advanced Markets materials, present sales concepts and education to our distributing partners at various meetings, and network within the insurance industry to continue and reinforce key relationships.

Key Accountabilities:

Individual Accountabilities:

* Case Consultation: Provide written and verbal support of Life Insurance Distribution inquiries and sales activities. Includes promotion and education of life insurance strategies to facilitate wealth transfer planning, business planning, charitable planning and the related tax issues (primarily through phone queue, direct calls, and emails)

* Advanced Markets Promotional and Educational Materials: Research and drafting of new life insurance tax/planning strategies and materials (or changes to existing strategies and materials). Includes legal research of all aspects of new strategies and review and edit of materials developed by attorneys and non-attorneys for technical and legal compliance. Participation in cohosting the Advanced Market's radio show also expected.

* Presentation of Key Sales and Planning Concepts to Distributors: Present and provide education on key sales concepts and regulatory/legislative changes impacting our industry to our distributors and sales personnel. Requires travel to present at conferences, study-groups, small producer groups and one-on-one meetings and presentation through telephone and web-based conferences.

* Identify, Develop and Draft new Life Insurance tax/planning strategies : Through fact pattern exposure, industry reading and, creative problem solving this individual should find new ways to use life insurance for specific needs or to promote the value proposition of life insurance through distributors-

* Professional Networking & Reputation: Develop and maintain networks and relationships with internal and external partners to facilitate the sale of Life Insurance, particularly relationships with other planning and life insurance professionals both within and outside of John Hancock and Manulife. This includes promoting the industry-leading reputation of Advanced Markets through articles or other published pieces in industry and business partner publications.

* General Support:
* Assisting in tracking and monitoring of emerging and existing sales concepts

* Participation as Advanced Market subject matter expert on projects and initiatives crossing multiple business areas (ex. New product, underwriting initiatives, etc.)

Job Requirements:

* Juris Doctor, Required

* Minimum 5 years of professional experience in: Estate, Income, Tax, or Business Planning with Life Insurance

* Expertise in Financial Services or Life Insurance

* LL.M., MBA, CPA, CFA, CFP, CLU, or ChFc, (preferred)

* Strong knowledge of life insurance planning strategies and John Hancock distribution model. This role requires experience and comfort with life insurance planning strategies and the various distribution models that John Hancock operates under.

* Proficient with advanced principals of taxation and accounting

* Conversant in financial products and investment management

* Highly motivated but, patient and accommodating in communication

* Must be well organized and detailed in approach, with good follow-through

* Action-oriented

* Interact effectively with various levels within the organization

* Manages multiple projects with changing deadlines

* Effectively balance competing priorities in fast-paced environment

* Excellent writing, editorial, project management, organization and customer service skills

* Excellent analytical ability and problem solving skills

* Highly developed negotiation, influencing and networking skills

* Strong knowledge of life insurance strategies, products, concepts and pricing standards

* Excellent presentation skills, comfort with presenting at various size audiences and methods ( in-person seminars, townhalls, study groups, conference calls, web-ex, etc)

* Travel to industry and distributor conferences, meetings, etc.

* Participation in industry groups and meetings - e.g. AALU, LIMRA, NAIFA, Heckerling, etc.

* Ability to present basic concepts and knowledge in an effective manner to Distributors and other business partners who may or may not have an understanding of Advanced Planning strategies

* Demonstrated facility with Microsoft Office products; working knowledge of Number Crunchers
