PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Communications Director is responsible for the management and implementation of strategic communications and all media relations for the Treasurer and the Massachusetts State Treasury. The Director is a key member of the Executive Office team and will work to execute an annual communications plan that is timely, relevant, engaging, and consistent with the mission, goals and programs of the Office of the State Treasurer and Receiver General. The Director is responsible for supporting the Treasurer's policy priorities and providing guidance to the Treasurer on internal and external communications.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write an annual strategic communications plan for the Treasurer and the Treasurer's office designed to increase awareness of the office and its work.
  • Provide guidance to the Treasurer on internal and external communications.
  • Draft press releases, talking points, briefings, memos, testimony, letters, and other written materials.
  • Draft internal communications on behalf of the Treasurer and senior staff.
  • Manage all media inquiries and public records requests for the Treasury.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within Treasury and with the media.
  • Prepare the Treasurer and various department heads for media interviews.
  • Help schedule, staff, and manage interviews and public relations opportunities for the Treasurer and Treasury departments.
  • Serve as the spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Treasurer's Office.
  • Manage and mentor the Deputy Communications Director and the Communications Executive Assistant.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise the Deputy Communications Director and Communications Executive Assistant.
  • Oversee Communications Directors, Public Information Officers, Press Secretaries and other positions that interact with the media in all Treasury departments and affiliated agencies.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Extensive knowledge of the workings and intricacies of all forms of communication, including experience with social media and web-based communications.
  • Command of written and oral communication skills including public speaking.
  • Strong organizational ability.
  • Proven ability to build strong and productive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce work product independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective written communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work well in a hybrid in-person and remote setting as well as travel in-person.
  • Knowledge of the workings of state Government.

EDUCATION

  • A Bachelor's degree in communications and/or 10+ years of communications and public relations experience or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $105,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
