Job description
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed. Please note that this section should be written in a paragraph format and provide a broad description of the role and its purpose as well as the reporting structure.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In order of importance, list essential areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. Research/Experiments
- Primarily performs tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and analysis of tissue damage. Experience in small animal surgery is strongly recommended
- Performs intricate small animal surgeries, including the installation of cranial windows and orthopedic tumor cell implantations in liver, pancreas, colon and breast.
- Provides instruction to laboratory staff in the proper use of controlled substances. Closely monitors use of controlled substances and maintains accurate records.
- Assists with planning, scheduling, and setting up/monitoring routine experiments including setting up for animal surgeries, procedures, and post-surgical care of animals.
- Orders animals and reagents.
- Performs bench work and post-surgical care.
- May assist with surgery and anesthesia.
- Identifies, troubleshoots and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental methods, procedures and techniques or equipment.
Data Collection and Analysis
- Collects data and surgery records, enters data and records into databases and data storage devices. Converts paper documents to electronic records.
- Keeps a detailed laboratory book and electronic notebook recording lab and animal work on a daily basis that is easy for others to read, understand, and repeat the procedures described.
- Archives EEG and video to The Image Data Archive at the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI).
- Performs basic analyses of EEG's and MRI's.
- Performs basic data analysis using statistical software packages.
- Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs and charts to present in lab meeting.
Laboratory Management
- Oversees the day-to-day management of the laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Assists the PI with interns and new staff through the process of onboarding including safety trainings, CITI trainings and other required training to be added to the IACUC protocols.
- Assists PI and investigators in ensuring that all animal care standards and IACUC protocols are met absolutely stringently by all members of the investigative team and are appropriately updated and submitted as per institutional standards.
- Ensures adherence to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
- Under the direction of the PI, creates and submits IACUC amendments.
- Maintain PI's DEA license.
Qualifications
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: This section should be a bulleted list of minimum requirements explaining the skills (what the individual is trained for) and competencies (measurable as defined by the job) necessary to perform the job.
- Background in neuroscience or related field is strongly recommended.
- Competence in several laboratory methods including histology, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy as well as animal handling and husbandry. While candidates may not have all skills needed and training will be provided, experience in at least some of these methods is favored.
- Ability to work independently with good judgment, organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
- Able to work with hands and problem solve in a sometimes fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
- Knowledge of computers and software applications.
- Eager to learn, willing to share mistakes with others to improve the groups' performance, willing to teach others, and open communication with concerns with those involved.
