Job description

REQUIRED: an M.A./M.S. degree. Seek a skilled microscopists with considerable experience in metallography and with the polarizing microscope, including preparation of opaque and thin sections. Teaching experience is essential. Expertise is required in the photography of archaeological artifacts and with using a variety of laboratory computers and computer programs, especially Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Job #13493

4/27/16TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR/LABORATORY SUPERVISOR, Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology (CMRAE)-Graduate Laboratory, to join the Graduate Laboratory, the primary facility where all CMRAE graduate and undergraduate instruction takes place in the materials science and engineering of archaeological materials. Graduate students carry out their Ph.D. research and undergraduates their senior thesis research in this facility. Responsibilities will include one-on-one supervision of all laboratory users; working closely with CMRAE faculty in designing and teaching CMRAE laboratory courses; preparing protocols for all major pieces of lab equipment; computer-aided documentation of all lab procedures; working with faculty, staff, and students on research projects; developing, maintaining, and documenting reference collections of archaeological materials; purchasing minor pieces of equipment and all lab supplies and maintaining equipment in all CMRAE facilities; and maintaining CMRAE lab computers and installing state-of-the-art software.

The position also provides an opportunity to conduct independent, ongoing research and to interact with engineering faculty and faculty from departments within MIT and at the other CMRAE consortium institutions.
