Position Summary

DISCOVERY CHEMISTRY INTERNSHIP IN THE SMALL MOLECULE DRUG DISCOVERY DEPARTMENT (SMDD) - UNDERGRADUATE CLASS OF 2023 AND 2024

Description: At Bristol-Myers Squibb we are proud to bring innovative medicine to patients in need. The chemistry drug discovery Intern Program is seeking future scientific leaders who are looking to make an impact on advancing innovative science to ultimately affect human health. Our interns will be challenged with advancing new chemical methodology that could have broad application to facilitate innovative drug discovery.

Chemistry drug discovery Interns will have one 10-week summer research experience as a key member of the chemistry drug discovery team. The program is organized to ensure interns gain valuable industry and functional expertise. The intern will work closely with a PhD principal investigator. The experience will include developing expertise in chemical lab technique and in instrumentation for purification and characterization. Interns will contribute meaningfully to their teams through challenging assignments and have the opportunity to collaborate with other functional groups within discovery chemistry departments. Key Responsibilities

- Learning the principals and procedures to work safely in a chemistry lab.
- Bench chemistry targeting the application of chemistry methodology and multi-step organic synthetic sequences to synthesize a desired target molecule.
- The isolation and purification of reaction products
- The characterization of reaction products using instrumentation such as LC/MS, NMR and other biophysical characterization methods
- The proper procedure for keeping a lab notebook
- Learning how to search the chemical literature
- The candidates who are considered for full-time hire demonstrate a desire to learn and make an impact on the biopharma industry.

Qualifications & Experience

- Requirements: Eligible candidates will have:
- Completed their Sophomore or Junior year in college, but are not graduating before the summer of 2022
- Will be a chemistry major
- Will have taken two semesters of organic chemistry and lab courses.
- Preference for a prior laboratory research experience with academics or industry.
