Job description
Seeking a Sr Director of Business Development who will be responsible for searching, evaluating, and closing strategic licensing, partnerships and M&A opportunities for the company. This individual must leverage their knowledge of drug development and their ability to engage with multiple stakeholders across the drug development continuum in a consultative, partnership-driven, solution-focused approach.
Search and evaluation activities include:
• Sourcing and screening assets, platforms, companies and therapeutic areas through networking, conferences, and personal connections.
• Working with cross-functional teams to assess and track assets and companies.
• Following up on existing business development discussions to help maintain a pipeline of active partnering discussions.
• Coordinating and leading cross-functional due diligence of licensing opportunities and effectively managing diligence findings to build a case to recommend asset or not.
• Building product/market financial modelling.
• Conducting competitive intelligence and/or primary and secondary market research.
• Building and presenting slides/business cases to senior management summarizing key relevant information to enable decision making.
Transaction activities include:
• Analyzing and proposing early deal term structures and ranges based on financial models and relevant comps.
• Constructing term sheets in partnership with VP, Bus Dev and Legal.
• Working closely with the VP, Bus Dev and Legal team on contract construction and review.
• Supporting negotiations and negotiation strategy.
• Integrating in-licensed assets into the SYBUS portfolio by facilitating material and knowledge transfer
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS
• Strong analytical, communication, project management and project leadership skills, as well as the ability to execute plans/projects on rigid timetables, are essential. Prior due diligence and alliance management experience preferred.
• Biotech/Pharma Experience and Business Acumen: A broad technical understanding of the drug discovery and development process is critical, as well as the value drivers in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Oncology and/or rare disease experience preferred.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform complex financial calculations such as product forecasting, pro-forma product P&L modeling (including sensitivity analyses), probability adjusted net present value, internal rate of return, etc.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of complex intellectual and practical problems. Ability to understand scientific concepts and to analyze unrelated and sometimes incomplete data to make significant judgments about external and internal business issues and concepts.
• Communication / Influence Skills: The ability to make professional and credible first impressions with internal and external customers and write/present clear, succinct and convincing presentations at varying levels of detail depending on the project scope and audience is important to this position.
• Leadership Skills: Willingness to provide leadership and contribute to the development of junior colleagues is expected.
• Experience presenting to and interacting with the highest levels of senior management both inside the organization and at other organizations.
• The ability to influence others in a tactful and thoughtful manner with supporting information and logic.
• Deal experience including leading due diligence, ability to assess and determine critical issues in executing deals, and a thorough understanding of contracts.
• Well-developed network of business development, scientific and/or industry contacts.
• Extremely strong communications and inter-personal skills, especially the ability to translate complex biologic science to non-scientists.
• Energetic and enthusiastic in one-on-one and small group meetings; thinks and adapts dynamically.
• Willingness and ability to travel to conferences / meetings (approx. 15%).
• Ability to use software for spreadsheet analysis, word processing, electronic mail and presentations graphics are essential.
EDUCATION
BS degree in a relevant scientific field with 15+ years drug and/or business development experience or PhD degree in a relevant scientific field with 10+ years drug and/or business development experience. MBA preferred.
