Job description

For those interested in joining one of the most creative and dynamic teams in the Pioneer Valley: The Deerfield Academy Communications Office seeks an Assistant Director.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Communications will work to ensure that the content and messaging of the Academy's print and electronic communications are clear, consistent, relevant to the school's audiences and stakeholders, and aligned with the institution's strategic goals, mission, and core values: citizenship, face-to-face interactions, connectedness, reflection and balance, pursuit of mastery, and shared experiences.

Responsibilities of this management position include but are not limited to: supervising production of the Academy's externally-facing print publications, such as the award-winning Deerfield Magazine, a suite of Admission materials, and various assets in support of the Office of Advancement's efforts; assisting in the development and production of content for internal and external electronic communications; and assisting the Director of Communications with the development, implementation, and preservation of a consistent narrative and voice.

In addition to enjoying a multitude of opportunities for creative expression and collaboration, the successful candidate for this position will also have a sharp editorial eye and acumen for details as they oversee production schedules and ensure the high quality of publications through compliance with the Academy's editorial style and visual identity guidelines. Together with the Director of Communications, they will develop, implement, and manage a system for copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking; provide assignments and editorial briefs for in-house and freelance writers, and assist in the hiring and management of freelance creatives. They will collaborate with the Social Media and Email Manager to create original material and adapt previously distributed content for use in the Academy's various channels and platforms. They will also steward the overall work performance, objectives, and career development of the Social Media and Email Manager and the Production Manager, as well as provide leadership within the department.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications: Bachelor's degree; 5 to 7 years' experience in communications, strategic marketing or publications management; excellent oral and written communication skills; editorial ability, design sense, and proofing accuracy. They will be highly detail-oriented; have demonstrated a proficiency to write in a variety of formats; have strong computer skills, including comfort with the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office; familiarity with graphic design/layout principles and production; proven ability to manage creative staff; the ability to multitask and meet deadlines in an environment of competing priorities and objectives, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Deerfield Academy is a vibrant, ethical community that embraces diversity in all its forms; the Assistant Director of Communications should also have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
