Job description
This is a unique chance for an industry leading scientist and senior team leader to join our Chemistry R&D department to develop new chemical, enzymatic, and chromatographic tools for the analysis of complex biomolecules. New modalities, such as lipid nanoparticle mRNA and viral vectored DNA, are being used for both vaccines and gene therapy, and there is a need for new analytical approaches to characterize and test them. We are looking for a standout, analytically focused biochemist to take on that ambitious goal and unlock the potential of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to extract more molecular detail on these types of samples.
The scientist to fill this position will take on this exciting future, be a people leader and help a small R&D team bring insights forward on the analysis of large nucleic acids and viral vectors. This scientist will accomplish new things with enzymes, envision novel reagents in sample preparations, and help develop sorbents and column technologies to create highly selective separations. In this pursuit, this scientist will engage a global network of thought leaders from both industry and academia and be aware of 'Big Science' questions that need to be addressed to impact human health and society. Experience in working with nucleic acids, viral vectors and biomolecular complexes will be applied along with a keen understanding of how to manipulate them. In this dynamic role, the candidate will become an integral part of an interdisciplinary chemistry R&D environment by taking on leadership roles in hypothesis driven experiments and prototype evaluations. This position offers an opportunity to accelerate professional growth and set a trajectory for pivotal scientific contributions.
Requirements:
- Lead a team of 2-3 investigators for hypothesis driven prototype testing and optimization of enzymes, novel reagents, new sorbents, and sample preparation devices for the analysis of large nucleic acids, viral vectors, and other biomolecular complexes.
- Find and vet new inventions in consumable technologies, assist engineering and material science groups on design of experiments for new prototyping, and p rotect newly developed intellectual property by preparing invention disclosures and patent applications.
- Lead product development activities to ensure new products are designed for their intended use while overseeing ISO compliance during design verification studies.
- Work with marketing colleagues and other scientific groups across Waters to commercialize new products and to showcase industry leading work through publications and collaborations with academia and industry.
- Attend and present at conferences and stay up-to-date on literature, aid in customer education, and be versed in emerging applications and methods of analysis.
A successful candidate should have:
- PhD with 10+ years of experience in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular biology or related discipline
- Supervisor skills and people leadership experience required
- Expertise in HPLC or FPLC separations of nucleic acids, viral vectors, and/or biomolecular complexes
- Proven track record on breaking down complex questions into testable hypotheses and experiments while creating theoretical models to explain complicated phenomena
- Inventiveness and deep understanding of bioorganic and biophysical principles
- Strengths in experimental design for analytical assays and data analytics
- Skills in mass spectrometry, calorimetry, spectroscopy and/or binding assays desired
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills
- History of publishing impactful peer-reviewed publications and/or relevant patent applications in this field of work
