Summary
A productive physician-scientist in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Medicine seeks a full-time Statistician to join an exciting and growing research team including physicians, biostatisticians, neuropsychologists, and health services researchers.
We are seeking an experienced PhD-level or master-level statistician or analyst with experience managing and analyzing data for health services research using STATA and/or SAS. Experience with large administrative file analysis and longitudinal data analysis are preferred. The statistician must be able to work independently and collaboratively. The statistician must understand both database and research complexities and apply independent problem-solving skills and scientific knowledge. We support and encourage opportunities to participate in ongoing training, collaborative research meetings, advanced methods workshops, and papers.
The position is associated with the Cognitive Health Services Research Program (COG HSR) within the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI). COG HSR is a collegial environment comprising investigators and staff engaged in health services research in brain and cognitive health, including epidemiological studies using cohort and administrative data. COG HSR is part of IHPI, which is a broad, interdisciplinary research group focused on evaluating the impact of health reform, improving the health of communities, promoting greater value in healthcare, and innovating healthcare delivery. DESCRIPTION OF THREE CURRENT PROJECTS
MCI DeM Study
One of the most frequent challenges clinicians face is managing serious illness in older patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition that affects up to 1 in 5 older Americans. The MCI DeM study is an NIH/NIA-funded R01 study that aims to compare the quality of cardiovascular disease care in adults with and without MCI and to determine the influence of MCI on patient preferences and physician recommendations for heart attack and stroke treatment. This is a multi-center, mixed methods study in collaboration with researchers from Duke University. The study involves secondary data analysis of 2 existing longitudinal cohorts as well as primary data collection using semi-structured interviews and surveys of patients, care partners, and physicians.
BP COG Study
Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) as well as high blood pressure (BP) disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic individuals in the United States. The BP COG study is an NIH/NINDS-funded R01 study that aims to determine the effect of BP over the life course on the risk of AD/ADRD in Black, Hispanic, and White individuals, and to estimate the potential impact of optimal BP treatment intensity to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in AD/ADRD. This is a multi-center study in collaboration with researchers from Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University. The study involves pooling and harmonizing data from 6 existing longitudinal cohorts, secondary data analysis, and simulation modeling.
STROKE COG Study
Stroke survivors are much more likely than stroke-free adults to develop AD/ADRD. The STROKE COG study is an NIH-funded R01 study that aims to advance the understanding of post-stroke AD/ADRD and how post-stroke blood pressure, glucose, and lipid levels independently contribute to post-stroke AD/ADRD risk. This is a multi-center study in collaboration with researchers from Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The study involves pooling and harmonizing data from 4 existing longitudinal cohorts, secondary data analysis, and simulation modeling.

The position involves a wide range of tasks including data management, statistical programming, and analysis supporting health services research. Specifically, the positions involve providing independent and collaborative support including:
- Providing guidance for study design issues
- Performing power calculations and estimating sample size
- Writing, testing, and implementing programs using Stata and/or SAS to clean, manage, merge, and analyze large, complex datasets
- Implementing methods to ensure data quality, rigor, and reproducibility of results
- Developing and drafting specific analysis plans
- Independently conducting appropriate data management and analysis
- Conducting computer programming as needed for completion of other tasks
- Preparing and maintaining technical documentation of data management and analysis files
- Summarizing, interpreting, and presenting results in written, tabular, and visual formats
- Assisting in the writing and reviewing of statistical methods in manuscripts and grant proposals
- Preparing annotated statistical code and logfiles for submission with manuscripts to journals
- Participating as a team member in discussions on data collection, management, and analysis
- Ability to develop and do data management and analysis plans based on the study design
- Ability to solve problems with data management and analysis
- Working knowledge of concepts and methods in epidemiology and biostatistics
- Experience working with complex data structures and linkages between data sources
- Strong programming knowledge using high-level programming language
- Proven ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results
- Excellent communication, both oral and written in the English language
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time
- Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple researchers
- Ability to be consistently detail-oriented
- Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, information, or related field.
- 3-5 years of experience using Stata or SAS in data management, statistical analysis, and computer programming.
- Direct experience in managing and supporting major research projects using large administrative datasets, such as Medicare claims, and longitudinal data analysis.
- Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, information, or related field.
- 1-3 years of experience using Stata or SAS for data management and analysis.
- PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science, information, or related field.
- ≥3 years of experience in data management, statistical analysis, and computer programming.
- Direct experience in managing and supporting major research projects using large administrative datasets, such as Medicare claims, and longitudinal data analysis.
Full time with flexibility to work with a remote or hybrid remote schedule
